ICCL Surveillance and Human Rights Senior Policy Officer, Olga Cronin, has previously explained why forcing companies to break their own encryption would profoundly undermine our digital security, as well as our fundamental rights to privacy and data protection ➡️ www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

EU governments will soon vote on whether they support the "Chat Control" bill. If passed, then every message you send will be scanned for child abuse material, even on encrypted apps like WhatsApp — undermining the privacy and security of everyone in the EU ➡️ www.iccl.ie/news/iccl-an...

Since then, ICCL has been consistently calling on the DPC to investigate the use of #RTB systems and put an end to this massive data breach.

RTB systems unlawfully collect, process and sell your sensitive data hundreds of times per day, making it the largest data breach ever recorded. Director of ICCL Enforce, Dr Johnny Ryan, formally alerted the Data Protection Commission in 2018.

Location data isn't the only type of personal data being sold by these brokers. Using real-time bidding systems (RTB), advertisers can also access intimate information about your medical conditions, religion, sexuality and more.

Women's Aid, the Garda Representative Association (GRA) and the Representative Association of Commissioned Officers (RACO) have called for action to be taken to address the sale of smartphone location data by brokers in the #AdTech industry ➡️ www.rte.ie/news/primeti...

After 8 years of inaction on Real-Time Bidding, how can you continue to have confidence in the Data Protection Commission?

Excellent op-ed by @brianhonan.bsky.social on the dangers of Chat Control

On your point about how these error prone scanning tools drag innocent people into the frame for heinous crimes, we @iccl.bsky.social and DRI previously published figures demonstrating this issue

The National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025-2030

To ensure meaningful impact, it is essential to ensure the strategy is properly funded, monitored, complemented with a clear and measured action plan, and implemented as a priority by the State.

ICCL welcomes the news that the Central Bank of Ireland will no longer authorise the sale of Israeli State bonds, or "war bonds".
ICCL welcomes the news that the Central Bank of Ireland will no longer authorise the sale of Israeli State bonds, or "war bonds".

This marks a significant victory for civil society and is the direct result of sustained, determined campaigning by activists, and groups like the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign. The move by Gary Gannon TD to launch High Court proceedings against the Central Bank also deserves significant recognition.

Under the EU Charter of Fundamental Human Rights, the government has an obligation to ensure that the Irish State is not complicit in, and does not facilitate or finance, grave human rights violations, including genocide, occupation and apartheid. While the decision to halt the sale of Israeli bonds is long overdue, it is important to recognise that this is not the result of political will or government action. It is the result of months of protesting, campaigning, relentless pressure and advocacy from protesters, civil society organisations, grassroot movements and trade unions.

This moment underscores why the rights of individuals, communities and civil society to challenge the status quo with protest, direct action and advocacy are essential in a democratic society. When the State fails to uphold or defend human rights, individuals must be empowered to hold it to account and demand justice.

Freedom of expression and assembly are fundamental human rights, and individuals must be given the space to publicly denounce Israel's war crimes and genocide in Gaza without fear of police mistreatment.

ICCL is monitoring An Garda Síochána's response to peaceful pro-Palestine protests in Ireland. We've also established a network of independent legal observers with our colleagues at the Irish Centre for Human Rights in Galway, who now attend these demonstrations regularly.

We stand in solidarity with Kitty O'Brien, the Irish activist who was recently assaulted by police at a peaceful pro-Palestine demonstration in Berlin. ICCL is deeply concerned by the global increase in limitations on the right to protest, particularly in relation to Palestine.
