I came across this great app called Aubin, "an autism friendly travel companion".

http://aubin.app/

The main purpose is it's a journey planner.

You can tell it things like how much you prefer different kinds of transport, how much time you want to wait at a station, whether you'd prefer a […]

Apparently theres a new wave of people joining mastodon, and with them a new wave of self-appointed cops "welcoming" them with long lists of mostly fictitious "rules" they need to follow.

This is a social media platform, with many of different ways to use it. It's fine. Mostly, just try to be […]

I've just retrieved my ca. 1985 ZX Spectrum+ from the mathemattic cupboard and realised that my watch isn't just 20,000 times more powerful, it also has a better screen resolution and (adjusted for inflation) cost half as much.
A dusty black keyboard with "Sinclair ZX Spectrum" at top left. Beside it is a grey cassette recorder and a "Mined-Out" cassette.

Dogs are allowed back on the beach. Pete is delighted!
Silhouette of a goofy Patterdale terrier, a small chocolate-brown dog, kicking up the sand as he runs around the beach. There is calm sea in the background and distant cliffs. The sky is clear except for a few high clouds.

Happy Anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, to all decent people.
Plaque "THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET
The people of East London rallied to Cable Street on the 4th October 1936 and forced back the march of the fascist
Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirts through the streets of the East End.
"THEY SHALL NOT PASS""

Shout-out to the teenage girls I passed while running for shouting encouragement to "the little doggy". Pete was spurred on and is now worn out.

TIL that I made about £70 over the last year on the Japanese translation of The Maths Behind. TI also L that there's a Japanese translation of The Maths Behind.

Random childhood anecdote, posted as individual toot in order to not derail some random joke post about kids these days not being into non-Euclidean geometry:

I have three siblings, spaced two years apart each. All three of us went to the same high school. My youngest sister's math teacher […]

[A pun some readers may find distressing.]

Inspired by a discussion with @alisonkiddle
Four pictures. On the top line, a fern, a baby, a fern.

We went to see Hamilton (the musical, not Academical) at the cinema. The intro bit pointed me at this clip of Miranda performing the title song at the White House: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNFf7nMIGnE

It's fascinating -- it's not hugely different lyrically, but the audience clearly think […]

Numerologists take note: tomorrow, 27th September 2025, is a square date in both US and Everywhere Else notation.

5205² = 27092025 and 3045² = 9272025

This is the last time this will happen for a thousand years!

Partner's been dropping hints for ages, so I've finally managed to get tickets for us to go and see Hamilton this weekend. Should be great, away to Kelty Hearts.

So it seems like, unfortunately, I'm going to have to use Whatsapp; I don't have much choice in this matter. What are the recommendations to minimise the privacy implications?

Please boost for reach!

Never change, Bill Gosper, never change.
The treatment will be informal with few, if any, proofs.

Currently sidestepping a tedious proof by induction by observing that if you've seen one proof by induction, you've seen them all.

It is WILD that we now live in a time where my job as an astrophysics professor has gone from "learn cool things about space" to "try to get someone to hold billionaires accountable for dropping shit on us from orbit"

Good morning.

Immigration is good. Trade is good.

There are nuances but they are narrow enough that free and open movement of people and goods should be the default.

Can anyone recommend a really straightforward kit or set of parts for running a ~5m programmable LED strip, powered by USB?
I'm in the UK and I don't know how to solder, but would relish the opportunity to do a bit of coding.

Today's facepalm from Big School: 11yo's homework assignment misspells "literacy".

[Unexpectedly wonderful chore]

11yo needed a spare key for the shed, so we stopped in at Wessex Locksmiths. The locksmith -- Nick -- cut the key and took payment, then noticed 11yo looking at the machine. "Want to see how it works?" He spent the next 20 minutes showing us all of the machines […]
