Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, passed away today from cancer. Despite what he later became, he was an enormous inspiration to me, and I think a lot of the comedic flow I do still derives from him.

Kinda funny. Reading through my own archive to prep some future books (stay tuned) and here's a comic from back before social media, when you would do a comic like this and it wouldn't even occur to you that there'd be an ensuing online argument www.smbc-comics.com/comic/2007-0...

Hey econs, what's the argument against baby bonds invested in equities? Like if you assume pretty average returns to capital, for the cost of a single year of public school education per kid, people could retire with, say, 500k inflation-adjusted. Possibly more depending on expected returns.

I'm reading the Wodehouse corpus from beginning to end, and am on roughly the 15th book (Piccadilly Jim) where it's just starting to get good, but not master level. I think one of the keys here is that Wodehouse is terrible at writing human characters, and in particular sincere emotion.

Hello people suddenly following me for talking about Erdos problems. I'm afraid it's mostly obscure quotations from Edwardian and Old English literature here, with occasional ranting about immigration and trade policy, but nice to meet you.

Another Erdos problem this morning:

(just to respond to a few people-- the system does NOT work by trying every possible answer and then checking. There's not enough matter and energy in the universe to solve theorems by trying every possible combination of symbols or whatever)

One interesting thing about Ai, which would make a fine essay for someone smarter than me is the extent to which we react to it as what you might call post-Romanticists. That is, we are offended by the idea of mechanism supplanting artists, specifically because we see art as self-expression.

Good morning.

There was an ancient Greek named Hyperbolus, who got in trouble for hyperbole, but nobody would've said that because the word hyperbole is a 15th century creation that has nothing to do with him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperbo...

Why do you think the norm quickly changed from "when you hear the phone, pick up" to "direct unscheduled phonecalls are usually emergencies or spam" ? Was it the uptick in spam and robo calls? The existence of caller idea? General increased awkwardification of humanity?
