It's maddening that it's considered smart politics to meekly mumble these idiotic slogans in response to being called Socialist instead of saying "Yeah asshole it's good when people have enough to live on and it's bad when billionaire sociopaths abuse us all"

I don't disagree, just offering a possible reason.
People do it because they don't know what else to do, mostly. I don't blame them for doing the thing that everyone says that you're supposed to do in order to live a life the market sees as valuable, and then not really having your heart in it. There are so many factors here.
