🌊 Disaster displacement can affect anyone, anywhere

In 2024, disasters drove people from their homes on every continent: From historic floods in Brazil, Chad & Europe to devastating storms in the Philippines & the US.

Governments need to invest in preparedness & resilience.

🟣Lives interrupted
🟣Homes left behind
🟣Dreams on hold

Internal displacement has reached a record high. But solutions are possible.

Reversing the trend requires long-term approaches and investments.

Every day, people are forced to flee their homes. Most never cross a border.

They stay within their countries. They’re internally displaced. And their number is at a record high.

To solve internal displacement, we need to understand it.
That’s where data comes in. 👇

🌏 In 2024, disasters triggered a record 45.8 million forced movements of people.

9.8 million people were internally displaced at the end of the year.

Reliable data is key for strengthening disaster risk reduction & responses.

🌍 Conflict and climate risks increasingly collide, often prolonging internal displacement.

The number of countries facing both conflict & disaster displacement has tripled since 2009.

📊 We need data to understand these overlapping risks and support lasting solutions for displaced people.

📍 Sudan. Syria. Colombia. DR Congo. Yemen.
These five countries host over half of all people internally displaced by conflict and violence.

Many have been uprooted repeatedly. Many are displaced for years.

They need both urgent aid and lasting solutions.

In 2024, floods in Rio Grande do Sul triggered 775,000 internal displacements.

🌊 Now, severe rain and flooding are again displacing communities.

To reduce risks, we need to use displacement data for disaster planning and policies.

Internal displacement is not just a humanitarian issue, it’s a development challenge.

80% of displaced people live in low- and lower-middle income countries.

Displacement disrupts access to housing, jobs, education and more. These disruptions can set back national development.
