Second is Penguin Midnight, an animated indie short that has already consumed a year of @ryanstorm.bsky.social's life. He's raised $3,307 out of $8k so far, this is totally doable!

You can take a look at them in action if you haven't seen the new episode yet!

Not sure how interesting any of this is to anyone else. Personally, I’ve always liked rummaging through behind the scenes stuff and reading creator’s thoughts, so I assume there’s an audience for this type of thing, even if its just for the backgrounds.

I’m still not 100% sure on the best way to break down these post-project posts. Maybe next time I’ll just post this whole thread as a newspost on NG or make a page for this type of thing on my own website🤷‍♂️
It would probably be way easier than stringing this across so many tweets lol.

I think that’s it for this episode's breakdown! Thanks for reading all this and a huge thanks to @speedoru.bsky.social and the team for having me on again and for putting such amazing animation on top of my backgrounds! ♥️

The stairs closeup was another unique shot. Lots of stuff in perspective but thankfully by this time I had accepted the fact that most of the wonkiness will be covered by all the people and of course, big Papa 👨

I could paint a variety of colors on the base of the crowd along with the shadows and then color-pick as I went to have some gradual shifts in the color and values of the little blob heads. You can see me experimenting a lot with them so each crowd is slightly different.

Also I’m lazy and wanted to paint as few individual people as possible lol. Over the course of these BGs, I developed a little blob brush that would randomize the color by like 2% or 3% per stroke. This gave it enough of a difference to add some depth without being distracting.

Speaking of the crowds, they were a fun challenge. I knew we wanted to keep the crowds pretty amorphous and not show too much detail or contrast. That way Speedo could draw any unique characters on top without the attention being pulled away.

I think I redrew these stairs like 3 or 4 times per BG trying to figure out what looked right. I used perspective rulers, math, and 3D models to try and figure them out. By the end of it I just used the crowd to hide as much of my mistakes as possible.

What I didn’t like was the amount of stairs this place had. Idk what it is about stairs in 3D space but my brain just can’t compute it. Something about how they move back, upwards and sometimes at an angle, plus each floor stepped back in space just broke my squishy little brain.

The majority of the BGs I did for Ep 3 were of the DWF ring and stands. Speedo provided the blueprints of the stadium and stage along with the DWF Logo when he sent over the layouts. I really appreciated the limited color palette here. It made the coloring process so much easier.
