FixBot is instructed and designed to link references to our guides. This is not a new Large Language Model (LLM). Training a new model costs tens of millions, and would not be a good environmental idea even if we could afford it.

That's a completely reasonable concern, and we've spent a lot of time thinking about this. We are doing our best to avoid that by sourcing every response from our own content.

One way to think about FixBot is that it is an expert at using iFixit. Our library of guides is huge and it can be complex to find the right information. FixBot is intended to cut back on the confusion, not add to it.

We'll be monitoring our impact closely. We're a tiny team trying to make repair accessible to as many people as possible. Our site gets hammered with traffic by AI crawlers from behemoth labs. This is our attempt to fight back and give people the means to repair what is theirs.

You're right to be concerned about the impact of these systems, we are too. The tools that we use have a cost but it's less than you'd think: A ChatGPT query uses as much electricity as about 10 Google searches. Repair is good for the planet, and the more accessible we can make repair, the better.
