From an upcoming chapter of Somewhere, Sometime. Yuri hosts a secret meeting against his will.
Well, there was only one thing to do, and Yuri stepped outside and leaned against the doorframe, waiting. There was a commotion coming his way, people stepping out of the way to avoid being swept up in the good duke’s wake. Eventually, he saw them; Glenn had gotten older, his face even more serious than before. He had grown into his role compared to when they last met, looking less like a kid playing dress up in his father’s things. Felix walked beside him, his own expression drawn tight even when their eyes met. Guess we’re not having any secret trysts this visit. “Yuri,” Judith said, raising her hand to catch his attention. She walked a little behind the brothers, and he wondered if she found it irritating. She’s not that type of noble. “Break’s over.” “I can tell, Judy.” He gestured toward his door. “House Leclerc is glad to welcome the nobles of Houses Fraldarius and Daphnel. Would you care for some refreshments? I think I have a couple apples that haven’t gone off.” Judith shook her head with a snort.

Situations like this don’t help, and he prays to every god he knows and some he doesn’t in the hope he doesn’t burst out laughing the moment he opens his mouth. “So. There’s a swan.” The city watchman nods. “In the market, yes. Your Grace.” The honorific comes a beat too late, and Claude makes a mental note to sigh about it later. “And it’s bitten Lady Goneril.” “Again.”

Claude sets down his phone, puts his chin in his hands, and his eyes roll back slightly in his head to stare at the ceiling. Byleth pushes her mug away, suddenly nauseated, but she can’t tell if it’s from the coffee rotting out her otherwise empty stomach, or the pensive knitting of Claude’s crooked eyebrows. Probably both. “I should have kept that journal.” “Fuck you.”

There was a particular blue the sky turned as the sun rose in the deserts of Almyra, deeper and richer than any dye could make; it was one of Byleth’s favorite colors in the world. That thin seam of gold on the horizon, the otherworldly feel the dawning sun lent to the stubby grass and sand—it made her feel like a child again, with all the innocent wonder of one. Was I really like that as a child? She couldn’t remember how she felt back then. Maybe it had been nothing.

It’s #WIPWednesday and I’m posting this to bully myself into finishing my Rookanis marital problems fic where my LoF Rook is sick of being mistress of Villa Dellamorte.
The gardens are no less oppressive, even if the wind tossing her hair and kissing her skin dares to lighten her spirits. There are even more people out here, gardeners who are skilled with pruning shears in more inventive ways than just trimming Caterina’s prized hedges. Maybe I should have the fucking things torn out. Doing it herself might quell some of her frustration, for a time. The water calls to her, as usual. Rivain is almost entirely coast, and she might have gone mad more quickly if Treviso hadn’t been a port that shared the same bit of ocean as home. The water is as still as it could be, the waves lapping gently against the bulwark. It would be cool, even in the heat of summer, and probably quite cold in the middle of a spring such as now. “Signora,” a voice trembles behind her as she puts one foot on the balustrade, and rises as she hoists herself up to stand on it. “Lady Crow, wait!” Too late. She dives into the water, cutting through and down like a needle into satin.

Then Asun sits back, balanced on her aunt’s knee. Her eyes stare directly at Osla’s, but also gives the impression she watches something else entirely. “No no, Despair!” Osla feels a prickling thrill at the words, but she keeps smiling. She leans forward and boops Asun’s nose. “Don’t worry, little one, I know the best way to defeat Despair. Do you wanna know how?” Asun nods, and Osla boops her again. the girl giggles. “Just like that.”

I’ve been fighting this character study of a Dellamorte marriage for months. Eventually I’ll stick the landing. Maybe.

Still, despite her gaudy, unfashionable ways, there’s something about Signora Dellamorte the Lesser that some find charming. She carries favor in her own way, and the right people kiss her cheeks, which is enough to gain her access to the finest salons in Treviso. More importantly, it’s also understood that if one wants access to the First Talon, one must also endure the Lady Magpie, as he doesn’t step out of their townhouse for a party unless she’s there. She dominates any conversation they entertain with that sharp but playful wit, and he smiles and nods beside her, offering only a little conversation himself. Even if the elite of the city recoil at the idea, they can hardly deny that Lady Magpie is the current crowning jewel for House Dellamorte. Yet they wait, watching with cold eyes; even she must have a weak spot, something that causes her to stumble. Whoever sees it first will find themselves in position to blackmail the most powerful woman in Treviso.

Playing fast and loose with the word today. From my “maybe someday” project in which Illario is the companion instead of Lucanis in DAV.
Someone stands on the path, listing from side to side. Rook stops in her tracks, staring. His eyes glow violet, but he seems to look through them. He lifts his head and takes a deep breath. “Peppermint and kelp. Not her. I smell her! Where is she?” His voice scrapes on the inside of her skull. “It’s a possession, there’s no doubt, but he’s retained his human form!” Emmrich can barely contain his excitement. “Fascinating.” “So the human soul might still be intact?” Rook steps closer, but the demon doesn’t react. “Hello? Is there another soul in that body? Can we speak to your human companion?” “No! Lucanis made a deal, and didn’t keep!” She loses her breath; this can’t be the heir to House Dellamorte. Is this where that demon moniker comes from? Surely there’s not more than one person running around named Lucanis. “He likes being trapped! I rescued us! Not! Lucanis!”

Rook and Lucanis flirting, as usual.
Something about being awake at four in the morning keeps Rook hushed, where even her movements feel muffled, muscles protesting as she helps load the last of the luggage into the back of Lucanis’ car. He smiles when their eyes meet, a reflex she can’t help but return. “I warned you this trip doesn’t look so fun on the tail end of it,” she says through a yawn. “At least Volkarin’s interesting,” Davrin jokes as he walks by carrying Neve’s suitcase. “Little chance of falling asleep in that class.”

“Rook and I have our own agreements, you know, ones that are fulfilled in years, not months or days. Staying with the Crows is one of the conditions, to keep her safe.” “No! Hurts Rook! Hurts Lucanis!” This is where he and Spite differ most, he’s found: Spite detests discomfort in a way Lucanis doesn’t understand. “He’s a being of pure emotion,” Emmrich had explained once. “You can rationalize pain as something beneficial or necessary, but he cannot. All emotion desires satisfaction at all times. Try to appeal to that.” It’s difficult for him, Lucanis has to admit; he’s buried his own feelings so deep and for so many years, unearthing them to connect to Spite yields its own kind of pain.

“Yes.” They hold the silence for a moment. “But we can’t protect her if you insist on trying to throw me down the staircase.” Spite cackles, and even Lucanis feels his lips twitch as he fights a smile. “I’m going back upstairs, unless you want to argue some more.” “I don’t argue! Lucanis does!” Yes, he had forgotten that Spite is always correct and is therefore never arguing. Lucanis chuckles and walk back up to the bedroom, Spite trailing behind, muttering to himself.

“Your honesty.” Silence comes from the other side. “Tell me the truth: can I trust your cousin? What chance is there that he would betray us?” “Do you have reason to suspect him? If Caterina found out he was double-crossing a contract, especially one associated with the Inquisition…” He mutters something she can’t make out. “It would be a risk, and he’s not usually one for that.” “So the reward must be great if he is.” “Tell me why think he’s working with someone behind your back.” Rook licks her lips. *You barely know this man.* She’s not one to spill her guts to readily, but who is Lucanis going to tell? Spite keeps him trapped most of the time, anyway. “Someone on the team is, and you know Caterina instructed Illario to find you while he was with us. He never seemed all that interested in that.” She can’t even hear him breathing; she might as well be talking to herself. “This whole place would be his alone if you had never been found, right?”

Lucanis says something else that Illario misses, and then he hears a soft feminine groan that makes him even warmer than before. He’s not moving from his spot until she’s gone—some things are best left unseen. Lucanis’ voice is surprisingly even, despite whatever he might have just been doing to his wife. “Do you need extra guildmarks? For the butcher, of course.” “No, I have more than enough.” “Well, keep track of what he charges you, so I can pay you back.”

From my Claudeleth murder mystery AU. Byleth leaves the house for the first time after it was cleaned out
Strangely, the bar is quiet, only half-full; even if it is suspicious, she’s grateful. Byleth finds a comfortable stool on one end of the bar, obscured from almost everyone else here. Roast beef on a roll slides across the bar, and she watches one of the fries tumble off the plate, only to be swept up by Mercie’s deft hand and eaten by the bartender with a conspiratorial wink. Byleth eyes the sandwich warily, like it had been the one to murder her father. “I haven’t ordered yet.” “I know, but this is what you always get when you’re upset, like the first time you came home from college after Sylvain dropped out. You could hear Matthias arguing with Jeralt about talking with you about it all the way from your house. Jeralt brought you here after, and ordered two beers and passed one to you.” Byleth smiles. “‘Any bad mood can be solved with food, fishing, or a stiff drink.’”

“Khalid and I have a plan to end the civil war, but His Highness needs to borrow General Eisner.” She paused, and then smiled; Tiana found it charming. “The other General Eisner.” Hiba laughed. “That will take some getting used to. Maybe we should stop calling them by their family names, since that’s not really done here anyway.” Tiana nodded; that would be a problem for later. “Tell me about Khalid’s brilliant and probably convoluted plan.” “He’s going to use himself as bait.” Now this was even more interesting; Khalid, sticking his neck out for once? Maybe Byleth’s little feint at her promotion had done more good than any of them anticipated. They both need to be willing to take risks in order to win any war. “We’ll make it known that he’s returning to Fódlan with me. Baba will escort him and Flayn, and we assume that at least one of the princes will take the opportunity to give chase, urged on by their allies. You and I will flank them with the bulk of the army, and it should cause confusion and disagreements between the prince and his friends.”

“You don’t remember?” How unlike an assassin of his caliber. Sloppy, that’s what they’ve gotten to be. They need to focus on the goal of this venture. They’re all getting far too comfortable, and she’s tried so hard not to be. “We went to pour you a drink, and you were already asleep by the time we came back.” “Sorry,” he mumbles, and the bed shakes as he rolls off the mattress. He’s still naked, and doesn’t appear to notice or care. His eyes are fixed on Chantrea, still fast asleep with her back pressed tight against Neve’s chest. “Tell her I have a contract that needs filling, please. I don’t want her to feel guilty for not seeing me off.” This gentle courtesy is perhaps the only reason Neve doesn’t cut him sharply about his foolishness. They have to keep a careful distance between them, if their friendship is to stay intact after this. She nods, and Lucanis dresses quickly, barely glancing in the mirror before he leaves. The door closes behind him without a sound. Neve curls around Rea more comfortably, and her lover sighs, her breathing so even and slow that Neve drifts off again herself.
