The takeaway: development is hardly driven by one lever, but it emerges from the interplay of norms, skills, information, and legacies. Iacopo will defend his thesis "Productivity, Career Choice, and Colonial Legacies: Essays in Development Economics" on Oct 23. 6/6

Do colonial legacies still shape tolerance toward homosexuality today? British vs. French rule left similar marks. Portuguese-ruled areas (i.e., Mozambique) are more tolerant. History’s imprint is complex. 5/6

How do young Ugandans choose jobs? They’re often misinformed about pay, but fixing these beliefs doesn’t change much. Instead, family approval, particularly for women, shapes career paths, even at the cost of higher wages. 4/6

Digital finance alone isn’t a silver bullet. Access to mobile savings/credit accounts didn’t raise profits alone. But when paired with business training, women entrepreneurs grew sales and profits. Tech needs skills. 3/6

In Ugandan agriculture, women don’t face higher labor costs. But when male workers are hired by women, some frictions emerge (lower quality, more monitoring), although they are too small to explain the full productivity gap. The real barriers run deeper. 2/6

5/ In chapter 3, she studies how employer labor market power affects involuntary part-time employment. Finally, in the last chapter, she finds that remote management boosts wages without increasing hours - suggesting that management practices can change remote work arrangements and worker outcomes.

4/ In her other chapters, Patrizia shows that low-income individuals who climb the career ladder pay a higher cost compared with individuals from advantaged backgrounds: They delay family life, have fewer children, and spend less time with them.
