I like to play games and write words. <3 old tvs
I've started engaging in risk-taking behavior. If my authenticator is really close to ticking over to the next passcode, instead of waiting for the next one, I'll try to enter the current number super duper fast. Damn the consequences if I type it wrong.

Though I might redo it. Measure my ear width (yeah that's right) and get the mics closer together. Could screw the grills off too. I know you're not supposed to do that, but why not live a little?

The heads at Michael’s were too small, and my partner rejoiced. This will have to do.

Learning guitar is humbling on pretty much all accounts - but there's a special place for utterly failing to do the alphabet backwards. This is somehow never a skill I acquired.

(Something something double linked lists)

I just Darth Maul'd a couple mics together to simulate human hearing, and it worked shockingly well. Now, I'm wondering if I get a fake head to shove them in if I'll get put on some sort of watch list. 😬

I may have discovered what my brain processes as "that old video game sound." Strong mids with the shrill dropped out.

When you have an obscure technical question, but the AI's been playing too much magic cards. #CRT

On to TV modeling in Blender. I haven't used Blender in about 15 years, but after a whirlwind of tutorials, I managed to model a super simple TV and apply the screen material in Unity. This is the start of the RM Colormaster 27, though it looks like a cube now. (it is)

Tuned up rendering at 8k. Renders at 12fps on a 7900xtx (not mine). Halation is brutal. The weaker and larger, the better it looks, but it's soooo slow. I'm not sure why my gamma is set around 3.89. I think most CRT TVs ran gamma around 2.2. So that's something to track down. Anyhow prog is good!

8k appears to be the sweet spot for CRT rendering with phosphor masks. Vram requirements are lower than I thought they'd be, but compute requirements are crazy. Now I just need the graphics card situation to settle down. My 970 is not keeping up with the rendering. 😅

Full pipeline finished for the CRT renderer! Beam is still a simple placeholder that needs the better code moved over from C/Vulkan to Unity (don't ask). And the whole thing needs a lot of tuning to get it looking good. Also I need to model a TV. But hey, the pipeline is there, and I'm thrilled :D

The NES signal emulation (below) is going much better than the phosphor mask. Tuning up the CRT portion of the converter is next. Maybe the blooms will help with my shoddy phosphors.

Tech art is a beautiful hell. I love it, and it is the absolute worst.

Reprogged Hell's Kier Unreal on healer. We had a tragic wipe where a tank saw the enrage begin and jumped in the hole. We got her down to 0.1% with the tank dead. No one said a word, lol.

Still working on chapters 28, 29, & 30. They really feel like the most important part of the book, and I'm afraid everything will fall apart if I don't lock those in. I guess writing is hard. 😬

If game chat actually works as demonstrated, that would be incredible. The promise of zero fuss comms that "just work" has not been a reality yet. But audio is really freakin' hard, and I have my doubts it will perform as advertised. We'll see I guess. 🤷‍♀️

Now to start with chapter 28. 28-30 seem like the most important chapters of the book. I feel like if I don't nail the 75% mark, did anything even happen? :(

Ex4 was fun! Hoping to get more in this weekend. :D

Two chapters of the fiction manuscript done (out of 40). Chapter 1 and 39 are written, lol. Just starting where I'm most interested at the time and writing those. I'm sure this won't come back to bite me in the butt. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Been listening to Colgera music on repeat. This is one of my favorite Zelda bosses now :D

First pass at phosphor generation for slot mask is done. Looks pretty sketchy at 1080p. Probably need a blur to work well at lower resolutions. 4k looked better but not amazing. Analog is savage.

The Residence is giving me "tv is back" feelings. So excited!

Absolutely loving the mind surfing song from Mind Cop.

I was a little disappointed that the built in texture sampler didn't have a nice jitter super sampler, but I'm hoping that can be accomplished with a custom node and some noise. Really leaning into the "maybe I can mash these two things together" approach.
March 23, 2025 at 11:29 PM
Just discovered the custom function node in Unity Shader Graph. I can write code in a naked function and let shader graph handle all the plumbing?!? Oh the workflow. I'm in nerd love.
