Building my dream game in Godot
After a healthy break, I'm back to building my original Slay the Spire inspired game. This time, I decided to drop the classic branching tree and instead take inspiration from He Is Coming, with boss fights now on a timer based on steps taken. Do you like it? #heiscoming #slaythespire #indiegamedev

For my autobattler, I wanted to setup a basic game flow. You now choose from a starting band to initiate your run with. Then, you choose from a node path inspired by Slay the Spire.

Do you like Chain Lightning?!?

What a legendary spell concept. I built this by creating a SpellBase class, which can support Modifiers. Now my new spell has a chain modifier, opening the door for wild permutations.

Inspired by DotA, I added a "Basic Attack Modifier" class, and my first instance of this was the classic Cleave.

I discovered behaviour trees and dropped the state machines completely. Coding is an endless struggle of It's Good Enough vs Damn I Got a Badass New Idea

Now I can try to make advanced behaviours like:

- Can I buff my ally?
- Is there a closer enemy near me?

Just can't help myself and want to play with the Autobattler some more. I added a frogger pikeman, and a toadmage which shoots water projectiles. And a poise system, cuz #soulslike

I use Linear.app for my own project management. I find even as a solo dev, somewhere to prioritize my own thoughts is clutch.

I had to double back and delete 50% of the code. It was getting buggy and I couldn't progress further. I realized I had a lot of fundamental issues and refactored everything to an EventBus pattern. Project is alive and well...2 steps forward, one step back. #godot #godotengine #indiegame #indiedev
