Resuming CSS challenge!
I built this with just HTML and CSS. It was a fun build

As we get to the end of the year, it’s worth saying this: if cutting people off has become a yearly habit, it might be time for some self-reflection.

It’s worth asking whether the issue is a pattern, not the people.

Glasses have been so normalized that we don’t even see people who rely on them as disabled… Other assistive technologies should be like that

I’ll never not appreciate this saying.

“Everyone is temporarily non disabled if they live long enough”

Building accessibly is building for your future self.

Next week or a few weeks after. I’d either be saying “I’m beyond excited to share…” or just going mute 🥲 either ways I’m anxious to know.

Do people who debate whether audiobooks are ‘real books’ realize how ableist that argument is?

CSS has improved so much over the years. I still get impressed when I do something with CSS that I used to do with JS.

Tech CEOs are making tech boring…why do I have to subscribe to everything now, if I didn’t put my foot down I’d be subscribed to 5 different AI agents. Whyyyy????

When I talk to people around me about accessibility, the common reaction I get is,
“Wow, people with disabilities can use the web? I didn’t know that.”
And I think that’s where it a11y starts, helping people realize they yes they can, but we often don’t build products that let them.

“The average salary in the company is 80k” usually means the bosses earn wayy more probably 2m while everyone else earns wayy less, like 30k.

A more accurate representation would use the median wage. Which would show the disparity between wages in the company

Writing accessibly means making sure more people can understand you.
Whether someone has a disability, low literacy, or doesn’t speak your language fluently, words matter.

Some Tips:
• Explain acronyms
• Use inclusive terms
• Add alt text
• Keep headings clear

Accessibility drives innovation.

Texting, captions, ramps, audiobooks, voice assistants, screen readers, tech built for disabled folks also helps everyone.

Progress starts with inclusion.
Even if it doesn’t benefit you, it still matters.

If you're new to a11y, try the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

WCAG is built on 4 key principles:

Perceivable — content must be seen or heard
Operable — works without a mouse
Understandable — clear + predictable
Robust — works with assistive tech now + later
July 7, 2025 at 6:05 PM
4 ways devs break WCAG:

1. div as buttons → Use button or add role + keyboard support
2. display: none to hide visually → hide with .sr-only +aria-hidden
3. Custom components no keyboard support → add ARIA & full keyboard support
4. outline: none on interactive elements → Use visible focus styles

EN 301 549 is the EU’s accessibility standard, and it goes beyond WCAG.
It covers:
Authoring tools
Closed systems
Emergency service access
…and more.

I wrote a quick breakdown here: thea11ypath.com/tutorial/wha...

I'm studying EN 301 549, and Clause 4 might be my favorite part so far.
It's like saying: “Let’s talk about what people need.”

It lists 11 functional needs, including something WCAG doesn’t touch much: Privacy.

My WAS prep update!

I took a quick detour while reading EN 301 549 to learn about the European Accessibility Act (EAA), the law behind the standard.

The EAA is the law.
EN 301 549 is the technical standard.

Spent the weekend using VoiceOver on iOS.

It was less confusing than I remembered (yay, progress!). Some apps were accessible, others… not so much. 👀

Mobile a11y really can’t be skipped.

As part of my goal to become a Web Accessibility Specialist, I tested Voice Control on iOS yesterday.

It’s Apple’s speech input tool for users with mobility impairment.

Learning to do my makeup myself has literally help me boost my self esteem, I’m still quite terrible at it but it’s my terrible, I can experiment on what works for me and what doesn’t.
