Have been looking back at some of the pics I took at Bempton & Flamborough Head earlier this seabird season. Always a special experience watching #NorthernGannets diving into the sea at up to 60mph with their air sacs that cushion the impact.

You HAD seen Ruddy Ducks in the distance but never in time for a photo, now you got one! Not mid-slap though, sadly.

Canada geese can be handsome despite reputation.

And this angle on a Snowy Egret makes its feathers almost seem raincoat-like to you.

Blue-winged teal (M), Cinnamon teal (M), an immature Eared Grebe, and Bufflehead (M) curled in the most funky-duck ball. All handsome birds. You're not the biggest fan of mallards being most people's mental image of 'duck' when there's so much variety!

Okay, you've never seen a White-faced Ibis in this kind of light and color and now they feel like they belong. The low reeds and warm spring evening light really blends well with their plumage.

Oh if only the last photo was in focus, it would be a lovely example of the contrast between the Allen and Anna's Hummingbirds! But even still, what a lovely crest on them. These little birds are quite aggressively territorial, chasing each other about.

Finally! The nesting boxes and energetic Tree Swallows you saw on your very first day of birding ever! You were starting to get the idea you might not be in California much longer so you really made a point to come out here to get some photos of them peeking from the boxes, like you remembered.

Shots through the sweetgum seedpods are incredibly aesthetic!! Who is s/he in the third photo?? You have no clue but they are CHARMING! The first two are a Western Bluebird and last is the classic American Robin.

A mysterious stranger with a dark appearance and a fancy strut. The american crow!

Circling with the red-tailed hawks but quite a bit smaller and paler... ID'ing it today in retrospect says its probably an immature Cooper's Hawk! Not the kite you imagined, but still a lifer for you!

Yes, the nictating membrane of the eye in action! Good pose, turkey vulture! Those feathertips really feel like fingers too!

Ah, white-crowned sparrow! With a mouthful! Usually its all song sparrows and house finches around you. The crown really is visibly different, but this is only encounter you'll have before you left SoCal so you never get to know them better.

Red-tailed hawks are common for you but rarely so close for a skyward shot to get this much detail! A lovely opportunity. Do they think of you, while you think of them? Probably not.

Oh, so dramatic! 😂

When the rain is very heavy, the Fiery-throated Hummingbirds can't fly, so they land on a branch or the walkway and shake and shimmy and contort themselves, trying to dry out. It's a little upsetting the first time you observe this behavior, but they're fine.

How could you not fall in love? The stoic posture against the wind, the attentiveness to its wispy adornment, the folding and unfolding curvature of its neck. The Snowy Egret -- This is a creature that could compete with corvids for nobility on the opposite end of the color value spectrum.

Pie-billed grebes. They're a little charming for their small size as a duck. They have an extra membrane to cover their eyes while diving, as many birds do. Good moment to catch in a photo, you were proud!

Although it has a golden eye, it should not be confused with a Goldeneye. Its a Lesser Scaup, or at least you're pretty sure by the tiny peak of feathers on the head. And this one got a tiny mollusk from its dive! Gulp!

Oh what HANDSOME bird to encounter! This immature Eared Grebe and their almost glowing eyes might have might you really fall in love with their subsection of waterfowl where prior, ducks didn't interest you too much.

The gulls were unusually calm and photogenic today. You now know they're Ring-billed gulls, but you never really cared to try ID'ing them much at the time.

Of the two hummingbirds local to you, purple crests are Anna's, orange ones are Allen's. This makes them pretty easy to identify at a glance.

They're common to your area but this is the first time you've seen them! Turkey vulture passing close overhead! You hope you'll see them roosted or even socializing someday, but sadly you won't for the rest of that year.

You haven't gotten tired of watching Snowy Egrets shuffling through shallow water in a year. Their flowing cloaks and deliberate footprints are charming in ways where smaller bird's twitchy nerves and compact form fail to capture your eyes for as long.
