Enomoto Takeaki 榎本 武揚 was one of the founding fathers of the #ImperialJapaneseNavy and one of the most colorful characters of the #MeijiRestoration. He was a member of the #Tokugawa Clan and so was on the losing side of the #BoshinWar. He was declared president of the Republic of Ezo in 1869. 1/3
The Uraga Dock Company was founded by Enomoto Takeaki 榎本 武揚 in 1869. A shipyard had existed here at the mouth of the Uraga Channel near #Yokosuka since the early 19th century. The first Japanese-built Western-style warship, Hōō Maru #鳳凰丸, was built at #Uraga in 1848 for the #TokugawaShogunate 1/3

One of the many reasons that the efforts of the #IJN and #IJA ultimately failed was that the Ministries weren’t answerable to publicly elected officials. This was a feature and not a flaw in the #MeijiConstitution, but led to discord and a lack of unified strategy under all three Emperors.
The ministry’s responsibilities included ship design and construction, recruiting, training, and overall policy. The Naval Academy and Naval War College also fell under their purview. The Navy Minister was not answerable to the Prime Minister, only the Emperor. 2/3

#Japan had developed infrastructure in the Northern Marianas { #Saipan #Rota #Tinian } beginning in 1914. Jumping to #Guam in 1941 was not a difficult endeavor, particularly because the Americans had drawn down their forces on the island during the #Inter-War period. #History #ImperialJapan
The ruined telegraph station onboard #NavalBaseGuam. One of my favorite things about living here is all these little historical sites that take two or three minutes to learn about. I didn’t go inside, too many brown tree snakes. #Guam #History #NavalHistory #NBG #BigNavy

The #IJN built three type I-400 #Sen-Toku submarines between 1944-5. Massive at 400 feet long and with a range of 37,000 nautical miles, each ship carried 140 personnel and three #Aichi M6A1 Seiran float planes; these could be assembled, armed and launched in just 45 minutes. 1/3

The Imperial Crest from Izumi's figurehead is at the #Mikasa memorial ship in #Yokosuka.
#IJN Izumi was a protected cruiser that is credited with being the first ship to sight the #RussianFleet at the Battle of #Tsushima in 1905. British-built and completed in March 1884, she served in the Chilean Navy as the Esmerelda until 1894, when she was sold to #Japan.
