you dont get to pick and choose with bodily autonomy. either people can do things with themselves, with their bodies, that you or others might not approve of, but they can do it nonetheless, or u gotta admit that u arent really for bodily autonomy. if its by the grace of others its not autonomy

and scarier still to me is that so many ppl who hold that sentiment are then shocked when that rhetoric is employed against exercises of bodily autonomy that they DO agree with. i dont want to be glib but its a frustratingly common "i never thought the leopards would eat MY face" phenomenon

but to carry that to a conclusion of "we know better and people exercising bodily autonomy in ways i find distasteful or conforming to wider societal trends shouldnt be allowed" is a shockingly, scarily pervasive sentiment

and there is obviously so much to be said about our warped beauty culture, about the expectations it engenders, about, yes, the pressures it puts on people to look a certain way, and much to be said about how the plastic surgery industry capitalizes on that

and ill admit im coming at this from a slightly different angle, but one that has very similar characteristics, that being the scorn and derision and vitriol ppl direct at plastic surgery, at ppl changing their bodies to look how they want

i think the clean delineation between Natural Desire and Societally Pressured Desire is patently bullshit and they cant really be neatly separated, but even so, even within that framing, the idea that a socially influenced desire is implicitly less valid or pressing is upsetting to me

nevermind that the discussion of societal pressure is so often grossly oversimplified into this caricaturish dichotomy of "wants that are natural and embodied and come from within (GOOD)" and "wants that are societally produced and pressured and come from without (BAD)"

or often not overt Disgusted Shaming, but a pensive and condescending "i get why you think you want this but you cant and shouldnt have it because its wrong/ur actually being PRESSURED into wanting this and you dont know better but i do/it will be misused by bad actors"

we have ppl out here acting like LLMs can produce ~psychosis~ in people ex nihilo, little examination or mention of contributing factors, and the people affected, real or imagined, are simultaneously the objects of condescending pity and sneering scorn, examples to be lamented and mocked alike
