My 8 yo boy is also the same. And some kid in his class told him about this book. He asked me to go to the library (never does) and he picked this out so now I’m curious I might have to read it too.

I don’t think it’s rated R but as a kid my dad showed me the original Night of the Living Dead because his cousin starred in it. The first real R film he showed me was Nightmare on Elm Street. I slept with the lights on and my door barricaded.
