9/ The flipside of the scapegoat is the superman, the warrior above morality. This double expression of dehumanisation underlies the hypocrisy and viciousness on display in the US today.

So dehumanisation runs in both directions giving licence—or even the imperative—to some to be above the law in order to defend the idealised group from those deemed subhuman.

6/ But this dehumanisation runs deeper. Demonisation of others comes from idolising those like you or those you want to be like. Elevating a group, authority, or person as superior to others is also dehumanising…

5/ They forfeit their rights due to their opposition to authority (whereas your opposition to previous/other administrations is protected free speech/action for the same reason: you view those authorities as being in some way illegitimate or acting illegitimately).

4/ You can justify state violence against them because they simply don’t qualify for protection from it due to their politics, identity, or life choices.

3/ Behind these is dehumanisation. This is most obvious in the demonisation of political opponents, protesters, and those deemed not truly American, those not wanted in the US. When you view others as lesser humans, you don’t have to accord them the same human rights you enjoy.

2/ It can be disorienting see those who’ve championed freedom of speech, assembly, and possession of firearms, etc now justifying killing people for exercising those things; ‘don’t tread on me’ replaced by ‘comply or die’.

That oft-quoted poem ‘First They Came’ starts too late. Its first line should read: ‘First they came for the natives… ’

The flouting of the rule of law and arbitrary use of force by the US Administration within US borders now is how it has behaved outside its borders for decades. The dehumanising Trump and his supporters are doing of their political rivals is the continuation of the dehumanising of the US’s enemies.

While it sounds like the name of an indie band, it actually is a term from the study of colonialism and fascism (popularised but not originated by Foucault).
It describes how the violence and oppression a state uses to control colonial subjects eventually are used against its own citizens.
