9/ The flipside of the scapegoat is the superman, the warrior above morality. This double expression of dehumanisation underlies the hypocrisy and viciousness on display in the US today.

8/ …but as threats to the purity of your idealised identity and the integrity of your community.

So dehumanisation runs in both directions giving licence—or even the imperative—to some to be above the law in order to defend the idealised group from those deemed subhuman.

7/ …since it views these people as more human than others or even as more than human. This idolising of the group you belong to (or want to belong to)—seeing your heritage, (sub)culture, and way of life as superior—leads to viewing others as not just lesser humans, …

6/ But this dehumanisation runs deeper. Demonisation of others comes from idolising those like you or those you want to be like. Elevating a group, authority, or person as superior to others is also dehumanising…

The flouting of the rule of law and arbitrary use of force by the US Administration within US borders now is how it has behaved outside its borders for decades. The dehumanising Trump and his supporters are doing of their political rivals is the continuation of the dehumanising of the US’s enemies.

While it sounds like the name of an indie band, it actually is a term from the study of colonialism and fascism (popularised but not originated by Foucault).
It describes how the violence and oppression a state uses to control colonial subjects eventually are used against its own citizens.
