Sunday, September 7 will mark the 107th anniversary of the death of Bishop Francis Silas Chatard in 1918, 5th Bishop of Vincennes and 1st Bishop of Indianapolis. He led the diocese into the 20th century.

Thursday, September 4 marks the anniversary of the shameful removal of the Potawatomi people from northern Indiana in 1838.
They were accompanied by martyr of charity Fr. Benjamin Petit.

Tomorrow, September 2, marks the 179th anniversary of the death of Fr. Vincent Bacquelin, an early missionary of the Diocese of Vincennes.
He was killed returning from a sick call. A true martyr of charity.

#OTD in 1878. Francis Silas Chatard was installed as the Bishop of Vincennes in the Cathedral of St Francis Xavier.
Within a week he moved to Indianapolis, retaining the “Vincennes” title for 20 years before the Diocese was moved.

#OTD in 1892, Elmer Joseph Ritter, (later known as Joseph Elmer) was born in New Albany Indiana. He was the 7th Bishop and 1st Archbishop of Indianapolis.
His greatest contribution was the desegregation of Indianapolis and St Louis Catholic schools.

July 20th marks the 146th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the original St Joseph’s Church at North and Noble (College) streets. Bishop Chatard, was assisted by the priests of the city. On July 4, 1880, the new church was blessed by Bishop Chatard.

#OTD - Old St Joseph Church - Indianapolis
2 lots, on the corner of North and Noble (College) streets, were purchased for $5,500 on April 25, 1879. The corner-stone was laid on July 20, 1879, by Bishop Chatard, assisted by the priests of the city.

the first native born (Indiana) person to be ordained to the priesthood was Anthony (Antoine) Foucher.
Born near Lafayette, (at the time, Fort Ouiatenon), on 22 July 1741. Ordained on 30 October, 1774, for the diocese of Quebec, of which Indiana was a part. He died June 12, 1812.

June 10 will mark the 58th anniversary of the death of cardinal Joseph Ritter in 1967.

First ARCHbishop of Indianapolis and 7th Bishop. Born in New Albany Indiana.
He was Archbishop of St. Louis from 1946 until his death in 1967. Ritter was a tireless supporter of civil rights. bit.ly/3T2jtRP

#OTD in 1856, Saint Theodora Guerin, Mother Theodore, foundress of the Sisters of Providence of St Mary of the Woods in Indiana, died.
She survived a number of obstacles and lived a life of humility and simplicity.

OTD in 1853, Michael Shawe, the only English speaking missionary to arrive in Indiana with Servant of God, Bp. Simon Brute, died after a freak accident in Detroit. He labored, especially in Madison Indiana.

Since this week marks the anniversary of the establishment of the diocese by Pope Gregory XVI, as well as the Conclave to elect the successor to Pope Francis, Here is a news item from Feb. 1831, the year Pope Gregory XVI was elected.

On May 7, 1964, Fr. Robert Gorman, Archdiocesan Archivist died. He was, for all intents and purposes the "first" Archivist of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. +RIP+. His work is carried on today by a dedicated Archivist and group of assistants. bit.ly/3pq4GoD

OTD the official bulls establishing the Diocese of Vincennes—now the Archdiocese of Indianapolis—were issued by Pope Gregory XVI. The territory then comprised the entire state of Indiana and the eastern third of Illinois.
