Respect isn’t just a norm—it’s a dividing line in how people interpret politics. Turkenburg et al. show support for respectful talk varies by education, cynicism, populism & polarization—and shapes reactions to disrespectful politicians.

In short, we show that respectful comm in politics is not equally important to everyone, and not everyone reacts to norm-breaking the same way.
Yet, while this variation matters for some norms and outcomes, we also underline that not all shades of disrespect should be tarred with the same brush.
inegoovaerts.bsky.social
This is important, as previous literature often presupposes that there is widespread support for respect-based communicative norms in politics. One underlying reason for conditional effects often found in pol comm research, may thus be the variation in norm-support across citizens.
inegoovaerts.bsky.social
(2) while depending on the outcome (i.e., affect toward politicians, political trust, political talk, political information-seeking) and the specific norm under scrutiny, several results show that citizens who support respect-based norms more, react more negatively to perceived norm-violations.
inegoovaerts.bsky.social
Analyzing a wide range of communicative norms, we overall find that:

(1) there is substantial variation in norm-support across the population, with differences based on socio-demographic characteristics (e.g., education level) and political attitudes (e.g., cynical, populist, polarized attitudes);
inegoovaerts.bsky.social
Do citizens vary in their support for respect-based norms in political communication (e.g., civility, accessibility)? And if so, does this variation influence how violations of these norms shape democratic outcomes?

We address these questions in our new study, accepted in @poqjournal.bsky.social ⬇️
