Low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) face the highest burden of AMR, but our data mostly comes from high-income countries.

DPhil students Saifur Rahman and Amrita Pondit are helping to change this.

They collected bacterial samples in Bangladesh, to help strengthen AMR research in the area.

Researchers studying antimicrobial use in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia have found many ill children are given antibiotics unnecessarily.

The CHAIN Network is researching the treatment of vulnerable children in these settings.

Global estimates say that 45 million children under five are severely malnourished.

The IOI and MSF recently examined children being treated at a hospital site in Niger.

They found the children carried high levels of drug resistant bacteria, which could lead to life-threatening infections.

Researchers from the IOI presented their research on phage therapy, spread of AMR in low- and middle-income countries, and infection prevention and control measures at the ICPIC2025 conference in Geneva. Find out more on AMR surveillance on our website: www.ineosoxford.ox.ac.uk/index.php/gl...

Data is a researcher’s most valuable asset.

Edward Owinoh, IOI's Senior Data Manager, is responsible for the huge amounts of data that researchers at the IOI rely on.

This data comes from thousands of patients in 13 countries. By supporting vital data pathways Edward enables IOI's research.

🩸E. coli caused 65% of all antibiotic-resistant bloodstream infections over the past five years in the UK.

Dr Elizabeth Cummins is examining how strains of E. Coli evolve resistance to antibiotics, in collaboration with the university of Oslo in Norway.

📢Tomorrow is World Sepsis Day!

🌍50 million people are affected by sepsis every year.

💊Antibiotics are the primary treatment for sepsis, but drug resistance makes infections harder to treat.

🧬Addressing sepsis means confronting AMR. These twin public health crises need global action to save lives.

👶 What can we learn about AMR from a baby's gut?

IOI DPhil student Chy Akpulu is researching infections in newborns with antibiotic resistant bacteria, and how this could be linked to their gut microbiome.

Dr Kirsty Sands, IOI's Scientific Lead on Global AMR Surveillance, was recently interviewed on the @NakedScientists podcast!

She discussed her new research into the spread of AMR in malnourished children, IOI surveillance work in Niger, and how resistant bacteria can travel all over the world.
