Narrowing accepted definitions of words is always a pity for me (see also "grope", "problematic", etc.), so I hope it doesn't happen with slop. People still use "sloppy" in a bunch of contexts, so I hope not.

Something I love about Neil Cicierega’s mashups is the way they force you to hear similarities between songs I “love” and ones I “hate”. They really break down barriers and value judgements, no matter how legitimate 😅

It’s Rob Sheffield, he rated both the new album and Tortured Poets Department five stars and gave them “instant classic” status. Having written a book on Taylor, he’s tied himself to the mast of all things Swift being perfect and won’t back down.

It was mad to see Justin Hawkins of all people turn up on that album

Have you tried the filet au fish? 👌

That’s fair, although even the catchiest melodies aren’t that original. It basically sounds like a happy Summertime Sadness

I'd go with Pop2, or honestly Brat, it doesn't require much context

I thought effortlessness was a good thing in music until I heard Toosie Slide

I enjoyed it until the reveal that the real enemy was an evil loom handing out death sentences

She's got a few decent songs, but her performances don't sell them that well and I can't get rid of my (probably biased and sexist) feeling that she's just got lucky with a music "in-crowd" and is riding off of cosigns.

Also, any thoughts on the new Jon Bellion record? Takes chances, for better or worse (TLDR texturally and thematically more interesting, hooks less strong). Always felt your takes on him have been more level-headed than most.

Well, it's at least better than her last two, but that's not saying much. Main issue is the lyrics, but I'm starting to realise that was a main draw early on and she's lost the endearing factor. Nice reggae-ish groove on Digital Fantasy though!

She made it!

I think the most obvious thing about New Adventures In Hi-Fi is that it suffered from Monster being a delayed flop. Yeah, it sold millions and Kenneth was a decent single, but it was a big commercial step-down from the expectations after Automatic for the People, and put a chunk of REM fans off

Oof, “elevated horror” reminds me of Intelligent Dance Music, surely the worst name for a music genre

See, I think Will of the People is their most kitsch album, but not necessarily their worst. It’s actually pretty listenable all the way through, if derivative of their earlier stuff.
The 2nd Law is so schizophrenic, trend-chasey and occasionally misguided I can’t listen all the way through.

Tbf there are more charitable reads on the lyrics than in Todd's video - like, I always took "the camera don't lie" as "it's clear to everyone around you from your expression".

It's not Pat Monahan levels of making zero sense, and to that degree I prefer writers being a bit weird with phrasing!

At the same time, Jimmy has so many more viable and outwardly upstanding outs, especially for the first four seasons, and still chooses to do immoral things. Walter White’s crimes are more serious, but from a very early stage his only ways out are prison or death, which are understandable to refuse.

Judas is that song where the creative starting point of every section is “make it like Bad Romance, but not quite”.

What a banger. Call It Off is one of my favourite breakup songs ever
