Twilight Princess (and maybe other more recent Zelda games I haven't played) also did this and it rubbed me wrong then. Long conversations where people talk at Link and he just stands there and grins. It's just creepy and weird.

That said, I hope the game will get a more nuanced label than “new Jon Blow game”. While the creative vision is his, he didn’t make any of the original games and there are a lot of talented people at Thekla who also deserve credit.

The Water Babies, about some (live action) Dickensian orphans who are so mistreated they jump off a bridge to die in fast moving currents, but instead wind up in a magical animated land under the sea.

I don't mind that stuff came out after me (and my god am I glad I missed Polar Express and Elf on a Shelf), but nobody there even knew Gremlins was a Christmas movie in the first place. The whole inciting element is Gizmo is a last minute gift!

I have a sick sense of humor and am voting for 2001 just because I think that, like The Coup's even more poorly-timed Party Music, it's funny now that a September 2001 album had twin skyscrapers on the cover.
