Ok #filmsky. Another year, another banging #LFF line-up to cover!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be dropping reactions & reviews for everything weird & wonderful #LondonFilmFestival has to offer. There’ll be coverage on insertmontage.com & bite sized thoughts in the thread below 👇 #LFF2025 🎞️🎬📽️
BFI London Film Festival 2025. 8-9 October

13. BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER (dir. Edward Berger)
Visually and audibly, this is more than a match for Berger’s previous work. Elsewhere, it doesn’t quite hit the jackpot you’re looking for. That said, it’s all extremely watchable stuff and Collin Farrell is on an absolute roll #LFF

#LFF press ticket booking is far more stressful than it really needs to be

Diving back in for #LFF day 2 and I’m not sure I’m actually awake yet. It’s very early ☕️

#LondonFilmFestival REVIEW

FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER (dir. Jim Jarmusch)
Very talky. Very low-key. Very Jarmusch. Starts with the strong but goes down hill from there. Drifts from nice to boring but like most Jarmusch films, there’s something in the mundanity to keep things interesting.

GOOD BOY (dir. Jan Komasa)
Weird, wild, morally cloudy, with a pitch black sense of humour, Good Boy is an effective kidnap thriller until it all gets a bit muddled & fails to follow through on its promise. Graham & Riseborough are brilliantly terrifying.

WAKE UP DEAD MAN (dir. Rian Johnson)
Oh we are so back. After the dip of Glass Onion, Knives Out has arisen. A devilishly plotted mystery, classic whodunit vibes & Johnson’s sharp writing combine for another wild, twisty ride that proves KO is still very much alive #LFF

12. FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER (dir. Jim Jarmusch)
Very talky. Very low-key. Very Jarmusch. Starts with the strongest stort but goes down hill from there. Some elements work, some don’t. Some story connections are nice, some are just awkward. Goes from quite nice to quite boring quite quickly #LFF

It’s a big step up from Glass Onion for sure. Felt far more like the first one with the Agatha Christy vibes turned right up

11. GOOD BOY (dir. Jan Komasa)
Weird, wild, morally cloudy, creepily cosy, with a pitch black sense of humour, Good Boy is an effective kidnap thriller until it all gets a bit muddled and fails to follow through on its promise. Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough are brilliantly terrifying #LFF

10. WAKE UP DEAD MAN (dir. Rian Johnson)
Oh we are so back. After the dip of Glass Onion, Knives Out has arisen. A devilishly plotted mystery, classic whodunit vibes & Johnson’s sharp writing combine for another wild, twisty, ridiculously accented ride that’s more than an equal of the first KO #LFF

#LFF day 1, film 1…and I’m starting with a big one

Right here we go then. Heading in for #LFF day one. Let’s be having ya!

If anyone is out and about feel free to come say hello

9. OLMO (dir. Fernando Eimbcke)
A really charming little slice-of-life, coming-of-age number. Doesn’t exactly push the boat out but it does what it does with tonnes of heart, an endearing honesty and an amiable sense of humour. The kid playing Olmo is a real star in the making #LFF

8. THE BIG BAD WOLF (dir. Leo Wright)
Short but sweet claymation charmer about not judging a book (wolf) by its cover, straight from the Aardman school of stop motion #LFF

6. CARDBOARD (dir. Jean-Philippe Vine)
Very cute little animated short charmer from Locksmith (‘Ron’s Gone Wrong’ & ‘That Christmas’). Superb, visually creative animation, a big heart, and a clever little story about the power of imagination all squeezed into less than 10 minutes. Great stuff #LFF

7. LUCKY LU (dir. Lloyd Lee Choi)
Glacially paced, gloomily shot & really quite stressful, the emotions take a while to eek through with this American dream/nightmare tale of a man who just wants his e-bike back but when they do, they eventually save it from being buried under its own misery #LFF

THE DEVIL SMOKES (AND SAVES THE BURNT MATCHES IN THE SAME BOX) (dir. Ernesto Martinez Bucio)
A title that’s more interesting than the film itself. The story is intriguing & the kids are great but it’s all a bit messy & unfocused. A banger final shot though.
