Published in Spring 2026, this issue will include a special collection focussing on the ethics, philosophies, and principles (EPP) underpinning career development work.

In keeping with our new approach to the journal we are open to receiving articles on all topics. However, this issue will include a special collection guest edited by Jane Artess focused on the ethics, philosophies, and principles (EPP) underpinning career development work. We welcome papers on all topics as well as those that specifically engage with EPP issues in the context of career development, including but not limited to: Original research Theoretical or concept-based papers Evaluation studies Case studies of innovative and creative approaches to career guidance. Reflective commentary of your own experiences within career guidance and development We are also open to alternative article types and formats that align with the aims of this special issue. Prospective authors are encouraged to contact Jane Artess (Guest Editor, artessjane@gmail.com) or Tristram Hooley (Chief Editor, t.hooley@derby.ac.uk) to discuss the suitability of their proposed contributions.

NICEC Journal Issue 55 Launches Essential Collection on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

This issue could not be more relevant or timely, arriving amid global events—such as the rolling back of progressive programmes in the US—that directly impact hard-fought freedoms and equity. We adopt the expanded framing of JEDI to foreground the structural and systemic dimensions of inequality that traditional EDI approaches often miss. This collection insists that to speak of careers without confronting power is to risk reinforcing the very inequities we seek to challenge. Issue 55 establishes career development as an inherently political practice concerned with human flourishing and collective wellbeing.

In this one-and-a-half hour session Michelle Stewart will set the scene drawing from her experience of writing the 'History of the Careers Services in the UK'. This will be followed by speakers from Wales and Scotland who will share innovative practices and projects taking place in career guidance in the home nations including learner profiles, experiential career learning, armed forces skills mapping, Careerscraft, Future Jobs Wales and developing a prototype data intelligence hub. Our speakers will provide reflections and insights on how these came about, the experiences of delivery and outcomes or conclusions reached. It will also be a chance to discuss how we can share and learn from such innovative practice across the UK.

Join us for At the Cutting Edge: Artificial Intelligence in Careers Practice — a dynamic webinar exploring how AI is shaping the future of careers guidance.
Thursday 2nd October 2025 2–4pm (UK time)

This two-hour session will comprise a series of short input sessions, where highlights are shared from the latest research on AI within the context of careers. In addition, we will have a short demonstration of a range of AI applications within the careers field. In addition, this session will be interspersed with interactive, small group discussions in break-out rooms, combined with whole group discussion and sense-making. Here we will reflect upon: what this means for us? How might we draw upon AI in our own careers practice? What questions are we left with? The session will culminate in a sign-posting to additional relevant resources and events to help us to continue with our CPD in this emergent field. As hosts of this session, NICEC Fellows Dr Cathy Brown and Kate Mansfield will guide us through our agenda; they look forward to seeing you there.

The Bill Law Award is a legacy and tribute to the work of Dr Bill Law, Founding Fellow of NICEC, who died in April 2017. His work was recognised internationally and was significant in its impact on the way that career development is conceptualized and practised. The award celebrates emerging innovation within the career development sector and importantly, the relationship between research, theory and practice. NICEC proudly announced the winner and highly commended recipients of the prestigious Bill Law Student Award 2025 during a online ceremony held via Zoom on July 1st. It was especially pleasing that this year’s awards saw an unprecedented number of entries and entries of such a high standard of research. The virtual event, attended by NICEC members, students, and professionals from across the field, was further enriched by a keynote address from recently retired NICEC Fellow, David Andrews.

The recent growth in International students attending UK Higher Education Institutions has resulted in a wave of change and adaptation across the sector as teaching and support services responded to the needs of these distinct cohorts. Career Services have been at the forefront of these adaptions as many International students look for help while making their way into new careers in new labour markets. But what have those adaptions been to the core Service offers in HE and what have been the challenges to meeting these needs? In this NICEC Seminar, Fellow Russell George was joined by Anne Marie Graham Chief Executive UK Council for International Student Affairs, Noeleen Hammond Jones, AGCAS International Task Group Co-Chair and Yash Sardal, a current International student studying at the University of Hertfordshire to discuss what International students are expecting from Career support in the UK and how Career Services have adapted to this demand

The Work and Pension Committee is conducting an inquiry into Jobcentres, the first in a series of inquiries in response to the Government’s Get Britain Working White Paper. The Government wants to increase employment and to help achieve this, it plans to reform Jobcentres, which it says are too focused on monitoring benefit compliance. The Government plans to create a new jobs and careers service, with a stronger focus on building skills and careers.
