Later, kids get Fact Cards for this set of facts. These cards focus on using what you know to solve the ones you don't yet know. Kids sort them into envelopes of Facts I Know and Facts I'm Still Working On.

After working through two sets of related problems, they talk about what they might call them, and generate other examples.

In Investigations 3, students encounter the Near Doubles after they've worked with the Doubles facts. The focus, as throughout, is on using what you know. The teacher posts and the class discusses a set of related problems like 4+4 and 4+5 and then 4+3.

That is why Investigations focuses on making sense of the problem via a routine that asks kids to: picture the story in their mind, retell it in their own words, act it out with kids or objects. The focus is on what is known & unknown and the actions eg joining, separating, combining, removing.

Encourage them to visualize what is happening in the story. • Ask several students to retell the story. This student needed to make 15. He took 2 5's and a 4 and counted on from 10 to 14. He sighed and told me, "There are no 1s. It would be great if there was a 5."

Me: It would be nice but you already used it. Do you know another way to make a 5?

A recording sheet has rows for ways to make 9, 12, 12, and 15. In the first row, a pair has written 5 + 4= 9 and drawn dot images of 5 + 4 = 9.
