Zaħqin makes frequent use of the definite article in-, which is a clitic. This is the equivalent to “the” in English, but also fills roles such as in the case of human relations. The first person genitive pronoun nal is considered more intimate than its English equivalent. Consider again the repeated example above, in which in-ħaņiqin “my friend” is written with the definite article and not a genitive pronoun. The definite article, in this way, implies a level of respectful distance. It is used also with inanimates. in-biq DEF-pen “the pen" or "my pen” To use biq nal would imply a particular attachment to the pen in question. If you were to say, “In-s̰adķi p̧edax biq nal!” someone is likely to feel it is very important they help you find this pen!
