Primatologist participants needed for online study on face perception in primates! All species welcome (esp. macaque sp.). 30min questionnaire, info below. Link unioflincoln.questionpro.eu/t/AB3u5RNZB3...
Thank you! #primate @ourprimatepast.bsky.social @primatology.net @ips-primatenews.bsky.social
We are running an online study investigating 'perception of human and non-human primate faces'. The research is being run by researchers in Lincoln, UK, UC Davis, USA and UNSW, Australia.
We are looking for primatologist participants, including students and research assistants (+18 years old, fluent in English, experience with any non-human primate species but particularly macaque species, no face blindness) who can recognise and differentiate individual non-human primates they have worked with by their physical features including faces (this could be either with live non-human primates, through a video, or photos). The study uses validated human face images from established tests of face recognition. We have also added some images of non-human primates using the same methods.

You will be given an Amazon voucher for the equivalent of £10 GBP to compensate you for taking part. The study will take around 30 minutes to complete.

The research has been given ethical agreement from the University of Lincoln Ethics Committee [ref 19037].

We will miss Augustin Basabose dearly and we are extremely grateful for all that he has done for others and our fellow primates.

He was awarded the national ‘Prix Patriote en Or, Diplôme de Mérite’ (‘Golden patriot’) in 2024, a great honour and a well deserved recognition of all his efforts in promoting a culture of excellence and his imparting knowledge and passion onto others, especially in his home country of DRC.

His smile, his good energy and his commitment and passion for community-based conservation and primate research were contagious and inspiring, surely leaving behind an indelible legacy.

His passing represents a profound loss for primate and community-based conservation in the (DRC) and for Africa and beyond. Augustin obtained a PhD from Kyoto University under the supervision of Prof. Juichi Yamagiwa in 2005 studying sympatric chimpanzees & Grauer’s gorillas in the Kahuzi-Biega NP

It is with a very heavy heart that we share the loss of a friend, colleague, mentor and leader in primate conservation, Prof. Augustin Basabose. We wish to extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and to all who ever had the privilege and chance to know him.

📣 Join the K/Creative Ape Team 🤓 2 PhDs on Creativity in Wild Chimpanzees & Bonobos; w myself & the v awesome @kathelijnekoops.bsky.social

@snf-fns.ch Uni Zurich @uniofstandrews.bsky.social @efp2026.bsky.social @ips-primatenews.bsky.social @primatesocietygb.bsky.social @primbehavecol.bsky.social 🐵🧪
two 4-year PhD positions in the Ape Behaviour & Ecology Group of the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Zurich, and the Wild Minds Lab of the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of St Andrews, to study wild chimpanzees and bonobos.
The PhD candidates will work within the Creative Ape Project. The overall goal of the project is to enhance our understanding of the evolution of creativity, and to shed light on whether humans are a uniquely 'creative ape'. To do so we will apply a comparative approach, quantifying the creative capacities of wild non-human apes to investigate the underlying drivers that shape creative expression across species. The project explores four interconnected topics: i) Making mavericks, ii) Funny guys and arty-types, iii) Lone ape geniuses, and iv) Creative ape economies. We employ a comprehensive approach that leverages long-term datasets, new field data, detailed manual video-coding, bespoke automated deep-learning models, and advanced modelling, to extract rich information on the ways in which apes solve problems in their daily lives.

Excellent collaborative, independent working and time management skills are essential. Previous field experience (incl. behavioural data collection) is required, and experience working in remote places under difficult living conditions is highly recommended. The project will require strong data management and data analysis skills, and 12-18 months of field work split into 2-3 periods.

Please submit your application in a single PDF to kathelijne.koops@iea.uzh.ch and clh42@st-andrews.ac.uk – by 4th of August 2025. Feel free to get in touch if you have any inquiries about the positions. Applications should include: 1) cover letter stating your motivation and how your expertise fits the project (max. 1 page), 2) Curriculum Vitae, 3) copy of the highest degree obtained, 4) names and contact details of two referees, and 5) reprints of 1-2 selected publications A tiny chimpfant looks at the camera with surprise

West African pottos (Perodicticus potto) are native to a wide range throughout West Africa. Solitary, slow-moving, and nocturnal. Because they sleep in tree holes in daytime and freeze in place when threatened, they perish during slash-and-burn deforestation. Listed as Near Threatened.
