We work to illuminate targetable mechanisms which will inform prevention and better treatment of brain disorders and promote reproductive mental health.

Results show that:

1️⃣ 4 out of 10 Danish mothers initiate hormonal contraception within 1 year postpartum;
2️⃣ they started hormonal contraception increasingly earlier after giving birth;
3️⃣ they shifted from mainly using combined products to progestogen-only products.

While the overall risk of depression linked to hormonal IUD use is low, this dose-dependent relationship offers new insights into how hormones may affect women's mental health, helping to guide personalised contraceptive advice aimed at protecting reproductive mental health. (3/3)

This study of 149,200 first-time users of hormonal IUDs found an association between higher hormone doses (synthetic progesterone) and a higher risk of depression within a year of use. (2/3)
