A Just Asking Questions Effect for spreading false information.
This thread is an overview of my lab’s research that I presented at Psychonomics this morning. #psynow24

TLDR: Getting people to generate their own false answers leads them to believe that info. 1/

I guess I need to stop dropping the f-bombs when teaching.

But for some things, FUCK is the right word. And I do prefer using precise language.

Love the frog and other costumes.

Protesters should be wearing costumes. It really makes the fascists look completely ridiculous.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

This is why we need more costumed protesters

Hard to cosplay as a badass when a giant frog or a dino or a big pink pig is waving its arms and thrusting its pelvis at you

I guess we really should all pay our fines?

And I just got another text scam about paying driving things.

Again a UK number. Nobody at DMV or tolls have my text number attached to our cars. Both are good tells of a scam.

But why are phone companies letting scams from faked numbers through? Why do attorneys general not prosecute?

Great example of just asking questions.

And @maddyjalbert.bsky.social I will finish the next revision because we really need to get our Just Asking Questions paper out.

Today’s scam text.

I mean the UK country code is a pretty good tell.

But the question is why scammers can make their texts appear to come from numbers that probably aren’t theirs. This could be shut down to protect people.

Cut down and scammers and you’d most likely cut down on disinfo.

Pretty sure my asthma inhaler is not contributing much to climate change compared to the private jets of the oligarchs.

Pretty sure I would need my inhaler less if climate change wasn’t causing fires and such.

I do my part with e-bikes and electric cars and better light bulbs.

They didn’t vote for this stuff which is exactly the stuff that Trump promised and which the democrats warned folks about.

Sure.

But welcome them to the opposition. We need to welcome people back to reality and to treating others as equal humans deserving their rights.

About 1 in 3 US Nobel prize winners are immigrants.
About 1 in 4 were government employees at some point.
About 44% of all Nobel prize winners were educated in US higher education.
As Trump demands a Nobel prize, he is destroying the means by which America came to dominate the prizes.

Two things of note in today's announcement of the 2025 Nobel physics prize (besides the work being honored).

1: The US institutional dominance of the prize continues.
2: 2 of the three laureates are immigrants, drawn here decades ago by the then-unmatched opportunities for science here...

One thing to take from this is that legacy media’s attempts to win back GOP audiences have utterly failed. If those attempts have also eroded trust among Dems and Independents, then they’re a massive own-goal.
charlotteclymer.bsky.social
Gallup has been surveying Americans' trust in legacy media since 1972. This year, a mere 28 percent of the public have "a great deal" or "a fair amount" of trust in legacy media, its lowest level in more than five decades of tracking.

AI generated false references.

For a discussion with grad students, I asked ChatGPT for 10 academic papers with summaries on a topic I know well.

6/10 were made up citations that sounded possible (1 by me!).

Of the 4 real papers, the summaries all were over-general and included errors.

And here we go. I never wrote this article, and yet it is cited here.

And of course, it sounds so plausible, I seriously checked whether I had forgotten it, or the footnote was slightly wrong.

Even better. Decrease the need for police enforcement. Build safety into the infrastructure.
irahyman.bsky.social
Actually, speed limits in school zones is something the police should enforce.

Protests are not something government should try to police.

But keeping the public safe from drivers, especially speeding drivers, is something to enforce.
