The story of the Infra Red Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) starts in the year 1800. That is when German-British astronomer (and composer) Frederick William Herschel discovered that there was an invisible form of light, beyond the red end of the visible spectrum: Infrared.
Frederick William Herschel discovered infrared radiation in the year 1800. During an experiment he ran sunlight through a prism, splitting the light into the various color bands that make up the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. He then proceeded to measure the temperature of each color band. To his surprise, he found that just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum, the thermometer still showed a rise in temperature. From this result, Herschel concluded that there must be an invisible form of light, just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum. This form of light was named infrared.
