Hi, I’m using this space to document my family’s move to Uruguay—logistics, feelings, some of the why and how of it all. We arrived Saturday! I'll be documenting it all here!
Before I left the US, I had finally gotten around to putting up my family pictures in our home. For packing reasons, I had to take most of the pictures back out of their frames. So I had to start all over here. It's been a *long* process but yesterday I hung them all and I feel great about it!

We always celebrated the "winter holidays" as actual winter holidays, complete with symbolism of the coming longer days, appreciating the silence and rest we get from winter. So here we are in the middle of these holidays plus Summer Solstice. 1/3

I can see definite obvious tangible improvements in my kids' mental health now that we have been here for a bit. It's taken a lot of talking and medical care and work and everything isn't perfect but I'm so glad to see the trajectory even if it's messy sometimes. #leavingtheus

A thing I learned yesterday is if you order a new lamp on Mercado Libre and put it together and it has an American plug, that's actually ok, but if the bulb it came with is 120V instead of 230V, it will knock out the power in your entire apartment! #themoreyouknow #leavingtheus

I miss playing music with my Ohio peeps, it's something I haven't found since I left there. I'm sure it exists in Boston, just didn't have time to find it there. It doesn't exist here.

A thing I've noticed is some people come here to Uruguay and then decide to go back to the US. The reasons are varied; not everyone moved here for the same reasons or have the same circumstances. (This will not be me, just saying it happens!) #leavingtheus

My kids expressed an interest in getting musical instruments recently and I would like everyone to know that I played it so cool and anyway today we went and got them a uke and a kalimba. ✨

Probably the nichest of posts, but a thing that's really available and fairly cheap in the US but super expensive here is violin/cello rosin! It is very pricey here! Not like I need any, and won't need any for a long time, but I was curious. Now ya know! 🎻✨🇺🇾

We got our cédulas today!! It took forever! It's like an ID card that you constantly get asked what your ID number is and I always have to give my passport instead and it is always only partially effective getting you what you need. So now we have it! ✨🇺🇾 #leavingtheus

I was wearing my Fiddle Hell t-shirt on the bus and an American asked me if I play fiddle and turns out she plays guitar, same genre as me! I have been looking for this exact connection since I got here, and it was just a matter of wearing my shirt on the right day, haha! 🇺🇾☀️🚌🎻

A mental block I still have is buying plants. I love plants but it feels kind of final, like roots have been uprooted but I keep having this delusion that I can braid back in once things are ok again. So buying plants here would cause roots here.. which I guess I still need to come around to. 🇺🇾🌿

Held my middle child's virtual graduation party today, yes months after I'd meant to. Almost her whole family was there and she loved it. She says it made her feel supported and loved so we did it right. ❤️

Recognizing that the world is on fire in so many ways, just here to report that I got some speaker wire so I could set up my new stereo up in my room and I am just sitting here between my speakers feeling so great. It sounds so nice 😭😭❤️✨ I haven't had a stereo in my room since high school!

Today I met a group of emigrants from NY at an autism event for service dogs who were just so great to talk to. I've had lots of online interaction with local folks, which is nice, but in real life, much nicer ☀️ It was also good to see the dogs. (Not getting a dog, don't worry!) 🐶

If you are struggling to find the right healthcare supports for your kids in the US and your planning to emigrate out, just know you will likely have the same problems wherever you go. I'm not trying to say to not emigrate, but plan to try and fail and try and fail and keep trying. ❤️

I go to physical therapy for my plantar fasciitis every other weekday and they're just the nicest people there. I am not better yet but in the meantime I'm enjoying their Spanish lessons and kindness. ❤️🇺🇾

Today I was trying to get our giant suitcases tetrissed into a cabinet in our place and found my old recipe box!!! I had thought maybe it was an accidental casualty in the loads of things we gave up to come here but no, it was just inside an outer pocket of one of the suitcases the whole time. 😊☀️🥂

I haven't updated in awhile, but we are doing ok here. Things are less frantic now and now it just feels like the language barrier is our hardest everyday problem. Which is a big problem but it's solvable, unlike this new blemish on my favorite coffee cup. Things like this really throw me sometimes.
