Arnau participated in the II Spanish Botany Congress. He co-organized the symposium “Invasive flora: from cataloging to management, through ecology & evolutionary biology”. He also presented his PhD plan on identifying plant invasion syndromes in mountains globally (part of the MIREN project) 🌍⛰️.

We took part of the MIREN workshop!✨
Arnau and Paula participated in the MIREN — Mountain Invasion Research Network 🌄 workshop, held earlier this month in Innsbruck, Austria. They joined through the project PRISMA: “Syndromes of recurrent plant invasions in mountain areas.”

IRIS goes to Iceland 🧊

At the beggining of July, Theresa ( @theresahenke.bsky.social )set off for colder climates returning to the University of Iceland Research Centre of the Westfjords (& @fishiceland.bsky.social)‬ for a 6 weeks stay.

Stay tuned for updates on old & new projects :)

Me and @agneskreiling.bsky.social have seen a lot of cool species while on vacation in #Spain: #chamalaeon, #flamingo, #octopus and a huge #robberfly.

It has been a treat visiting @Theresahenke.bsky.social and hear about her work on #bioinvasions.

We had a busy Invasive Species Week at @iris-eeza.bsky.social!!
We joined the Macrobioblitz #SEI25, organized a public debate on invasions at La Guajira in Almería and were part of the organizing and scientific committees of IyrCIS (iyrcis.webs.uvigo.gal). Next year: more and better! :)

Within PRISMA we will compare a global perspective (lead by IRIS) to the occurrence of invasion syndromes in plant invasions found in the Sierra Nevada mountain range (lead by the Cordoba team).

On April 3rd Ana, Arnau, Paula, and Theresa headed to Cordoba for the PRISMA kick-off meeting. Together with a team of researchers lead by Pablo González Moreno, we will investigate invasion syndromes in plant invasion in mountains over the next four years.

Stay tuned for exciting PRISMA updates!

IRIS’s first PHD student!!!

Arnau Bosh Guiu has officially started working at the EEZA as part of the IRIS team. Over the next 4 years he will be researching plant invasions in mountain ecosystems worldwide as part of the PRISMA project.

Welcome to the team, Arnau!! 🙂

In the beginning of march, Ana went to Sevilla for an interviewing process for a permanent position with a focus on global change & biodiversity conservation. She was selected as one of four candidates to receive a permanent position with the CSIC.

Congratulations @ananovoaperez.bsky.social 🎉

At the end of February, Pavel Pipek (@pavelpipek.bsky.social) (Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Science) came for a visit. In-between catching up, bird-watching, and exciting discussions on culturomics & iEcology, the IRIS team got an introduction into html and data mining.

In January, @ananovoaperez.bsky.social attended the kick off of the Horizon project OneSTOP coordinated by Quentin Groom (Belgium) & Helen Roy (UK). OneSTOP aims to reduce the risks of introducing & spreading invasive species across Europe. Read more about OneSTOP: blog.pensoft.net/2025/02/13/p...

IRIS is growing 🎉 Lucas from Brazil joined us for a short stay until the end of April & Lida from Greece arrived for ger 4-month internship. Both will support Paula in her project on the management of naturalized alien plant species in mountain areas.

IRIS went to Prague!!

From 10. - 14.02 our team co-organised two exciting workshops on invasion culturomics ( and SoNAF (Social dimensions of Naturalized Alien Flora) that took place in the castle of Průhonice @ibotcz.bsky.social
@invaculture.net
We are excited to work on the future developments!

How to include a human dimension in the research of biological invasions? @theresahenke.bsky.social talked to recreational anglers in Iceland to get their perspective on the spread of the European flounder. She was kind enough to share her story and findings with us!

The human dimensions of biological invasions – involving stakeholders in addressing invasive species
Can the knowledge and experience of recreational anglers in Iceland help us understand how far the invasive flounder has spread in the country?

Happy that my 2nd PhD paper is officially published in @neobiota.pensoft.net 🐟
Looking at flounder, we highlight the value of stakeholder observations in the monitoring of alien species 🐟🇮🇸

The time has come 🤓🇮🇸🐟

I will be defending my PhD on Thursday at 13 GMT. If you want to hear me talk about flounder (once again) and all the fun things I did over the past five years, tune in for the life stream:

IRIS is starting the new week with coffee & work from the beach :)

@zarahpattison.bsky.social, want to join us for a Maricastaña monday? :)

Today, we had our first (of hopefully many) weekly IRIS team meetings to get to know each other & catch up on our projects, progresses and potential mishaps 🙂

We can’t wait to see where all our projects will lead to & what new ideas will come up in these meetings. Stay tuned!
