They are rodents. Rodents chew. But yes, their teeth grow throughout their lifetimes, and they need to chew to wear them down. If the teeth aren't properly aligned, you can get something like this (although that's a rabbit). Obviously, that's a bad situation, as they can't properly eat this way.

I promised you pictures of my Mongolian Gerbils Hurricane and Spitfire. Just did a new scape in their gerbillarium. They are very busy investigating it all. The one you see eating is Spitfire, the one going in and out of the three-chamber house is Hurricane.
