Drawing inspiration from Mexican folklore, the Nahual is a person who can transform into an animal.

Tonalli wanders the skies in her eagle form scanning the valleys below in search of her prey. Who will she have tonight?

Quite enjoyed If You’re Seeing This, It’s Meant For You by Leigh Stein. I’m left wondering…how much of myself am I willing to sacrifice to sate the algorithm?

Book club 📚 has been fire. For the month of September we read, Disorientation. Quite the rollercoaster. When you think you’ve gotten to the center of the mystery, turns out that’s only a small piece of a greater scheme. Fantastic layered read and pairs well with Yellowface by R. F. Kuang

“Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One” by Kristen Arnett throws the reader into the chaos of wandering through life, trying to survive, and chasing your dreams all while wearing a polyester clown suit in 90 degree Florida weather.

I’ve been furiously working for months to update my website curating samples of the type of work I’ve created as a technical illustrator. I’m happy it’s finally live 🔗 www.irmamotta.com

Another fantastic pick from June’s Femme Fire Books book club was Milo Todd’s, The Lilac People. A MUST read. It tells the story of a trans man surviving WWI and the forgotten history of the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin. A poignant, current and eye-opening story.

This months’s pick for book club: Jose Antonio Vargas’ memoir, “Dear America” offers a look into his life as an undocumented citizen in the United States. His is just one voice amongst many who’ve made the US their home and grapple with the uncertainty of a country that both shuns and welcomes them.

I am apparently the “last technical illustrator unicorn” of my world…how does that movie end for the unicorn?

Finally came around to actually reading Thirst (“La Sed”) by Argentinian author Marina Yuszczuk. It has been sitting on my shelf for a while and I loved it. No notes. Themes of longing, sexuality, freedom and death are weaved into a beautifully tragic vampire story that left me thirsting for more 🥀

Wish I had finished reading the last part of Malinalli, by Veronica Chapa, for book club but having now finished it, my feelings have not really changed: beautiful evocative prose, well researched, but unsatisfying. Any recs of books written by Mexican women? Bonus if written in Spanish.

I’ve been taking Léa Wai’s Reality to Fantasy portrait drawing class in an effort to refine my skills. This is my latest portrait — even though there are definitely things to improve — I’m excited to see how my style develops once I start tackling the “fantasy” portion of the course.

Paying the cat tax with Jinxy so the algorithm shows me kitties.

We’ve had this giant box (it’s huge!) in our tiny apartment for over a month because the little void that stalks us claimed it as hers. Can’t say no to her 🖤
