Yeah I don’t know what that index measures exactly but it’s notoriously hard to fire people in the UK. Need to show a documented pattern of underperformance and give them a chance to improve on a performance improvement plan.
The UK’s pro cyclical capital buffer is equally a form of state directed credit, of a different flavour admittedly. State mandated union bargaining is v anti-neoliberal curbs on corporate bargaining too. But sure China is more statist but how should you value land use vs corporate policy?
Yep but it’s also something you can turn off and on again so it’s a useful sink when prices get super cheap at summer noon and also $1.40 is cheap enough. It’s about $1.85 in the uk (£1.50) after tax so if green fuel had no fuel duty that’s job done.
I mean…kier Starmer is doing a lot of what I would call center right policy. On immigration, on planning and it sounds like maybe soon on tax reform. If center right policy is so bad why is Labour doing so much of 2015 era center right talking points 🤣
Yeah I mean the Tory party itself had gone completely mad as had their media ecosystem I just am disagreeing that it represents a crisis of left wing thought.
Yeah and the solution that makes sense for the uk involves at least 10GW more nuclear I think at which point we would already have excess power in the summer.
I mean I was on a trading desk at the time so I couldn’t drink but by the time markets closed every what’s app group I was in with an even mildly truss positive person was 500 messages deep in recrimination.
Like the think tank people thought they were getting one thing and were happy and the budget that was actually announced was some other thing and everyone halfway competent was drinking themselves half way to death by the end of budget day. 🤣🥲
I mean Liz truss was like Kemi. A partisan idiot who fancied herself a bold thinker. She talked with loads of think tanks and told them how great their ideas were and then went through them and did a budget with every tax cut and every other idea rejected even when they were presented as neutral.
If we are going to build 5GW of nuclear for national security then there won’t be any more summer gas use to go away. I mean, getting into complicated modelling questions at that point.
Well there is some, but, depends how you feel about interconnectors. Will basically always be cheaper to buy French solar from the south of France. If you are cost maxing that’s better. If you are national security maxing nuclear is probably better.
Yeah that’s one of the better stories. DM me and I’ll check when I get home. I have a large segment of HH stories but some are kindle and some are physical.
So I believe at least on firm claims to have direct solar+air to petrol at that price but it may be wrong, but it’s certainly at the point where it’s almost a trivial subsidy.
So the full system costs would be 6x at which point nuclear is cheaper. Now we can certainly build some solar because within a diversified grid the additional system costs are ameliorated. Any backup system for wind works equally well as a seasonal backup. But an all solar grid won’t work.
Given Uk energy demand is slightly skewed to winter and would be highly skewed under full electrification of heating we would need to build about 12x the notional solar capacity of our average daily use. For Bavaria the ratio is under 2x I think.
Yeah I don’t think that’s really true. The problem is the summer winter divide at high latitudes. I have solar and batteries on my house in London and may-august averages 10x the dec-feb output. The short days really kill you.
