Alternatively, a doctored photo can be considered an "imperfect" record of a record. It's analogous to monks imperfectly copying texts. The new text/record is an unintentionally "doctored" copy of the original.

Couldn't a doctored photo be understood as a mixed record? The undoctored part is an older record of a scene captured by a camera. The doctored part is a newer record of the computations that manipulated certain pixels of the older record.
