At one of my first library jobs, they had a bunch of uncommon older chemistry journals on microcard. Other libraries would request articles, but we didn’t have a reader-printer so I’d offer to lend them the cards if they had a microcard reader and basically no one ever said “yes”

Yeah, you’re right; the hobbyists are probably mostly older, educated, upper middle class people who think it’s quaint and folksy. The “grew up singing it at church” people are probably a much different demographic

I have a cd that came with a book about religious music in Alabama that has some primitive baptists in northern Alabama singing sacred harp and it’s remarkable, but I’m pretty sure those people (or their kids or grandkids) might be up for some terrorism, unfortunately

I tend to think that while it’s likely that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, it is extremely unlikely that it is anywhere close enough that we’ll ever know (I also think that ftl is impossible and that we will never colonize space—even locally)
