Sitting under an oil painting of your ancestors hunting on your family estate, while declaring yourself not to be a toff is spot on for the fake Everyman toff and viscount Matt Ridley.

yes, and coherent text gets confused for actual understanding. It’s all “hallucination“ but sometimes it’s congruent with reality.

Fair enough. Perhaps inanimate is a better word

It is very human to imagine agency in non-human things. Generative AI is a apophenia minefield.

Do we ascribe creativity to the ink blot or the viewer in a rorscharch test?
October 14, 2025 at 12:11 PM
Hallucination is i think the wrong word. LLMs generate something based on a whole pile of statistics and training data, but have no semantic understanding. They are only “correct” or “hallucinations“ from a human perspective.

Pretty sure it was Craig Simons as James Acaster as Craig Simons

Inspector Imanishi Investigates, a book recommendation from @harkaway.bsky.social, is just about this in novel form. He’s just a guy, dealing with his boss and family in a normal way, while he does his job of solving a crime

Perhaps your two examples demonstrate the power of other ways of engaging in a public dialogue on important issues? As an academic, I would hope you would be excited to see these issues discussed more broadly, no matter your personal view.

Your alternative to taxing billionaires more is to starve grannies out of their homes?
March 23, 2025 at 10:44 AM
You know as well as I do that there is at least a 5% lower rate on dividends than income, even at the top rate. Seems like a fairer place to start than eliminating the personal allowance.
March 23, 2025 at 10:27 AM
An excellent feature of a progressive tax regime. The personal allowance starts to get clawed back at £100k. Are you arguing that we should tax earners below that more to avoid raising taxes on those above?
March 23, 2025 at 10:26 AM
Arguing about wealth taxes can come later.
March 23, 2025 at 8:56 AM
Just tax investment income like employment income, make it progressive and quit talking about raising taxes for lower and middle income earners. And seriously progressive inheritance taxes for those who sit Smaug-like on unearned wealth for generations
