I think they were ready to agree to anything because they probably felt it would get overturned for being illegal or they just expect a democract congress of president to overturn them.
This is a Republican shutdown, they control congress and the presidency. They need to accept responsibility for it. They knew they needed Democrat votes but did nothing to try and get them. Its the fault of Johnson and Thune.
Partly, the banktruptcy was probably triggered by the tariff slowdown. But it was mainly to do with the huge amount of money they had borrowed and they also conducted some very shady borrowing on their sales and on on parts they bought.
Access, they're scared they'll lose access, thats all that matters to them. They're blowhards when it comes to freedom of the press or speaking truth to power.
Once Reform implode, rightwingers will want a sensible right wing alternative, a centre right Tory party led by Cleverly would be the sort of thing they'd want to go back to.
