sure, like i said im not anti-union, i know what they did for us.
but, i have a hard time believing that people put in power wont strive to keep it rather then put the work in, or do just enough to stay elected...or "collect votes" however they can..

I just don't trust people like that.

It creates union only jobs...etc. effectively a join or starve mentality.

I guess that's where I can't do it. The "as a union" part for me is tough.
I tend to be more of a collectivist in the sense that all membership is voluntary and equal (bakunin, Proudhon etc.)
But the union system in the US is damn near mandatory if it gets a hold of your industry...

See that's what I can't do.
I can't have someone tell me not to work...and then make compromises and concessions at the table.

That argument is less valid when you are in software. this is a digital world. You can work for anyone from anywhere there is internet connection.
Does it take work? Absolutely. but so does our industry..
But also.. I'm not sure I trust the votes of people who are not willing to fight.

This is why I left and found a place that actually respects my work life balance and doesn't crunch.
To be clear, I'm not anti union, I'm skeptical that unions are needed in software...where every company in the world needs us to succeed.

But that's exactly the problem. I don't want to have to vote to have my voice spoken for...I speak for myself because I trust no one to do it for me in the way I would. No concessions, no compromises .no negotiating.

And as far as wages go...dev is different in that it's needed everywhere. It's not hard to get a competitive salary when every corporation on earth has some need for software.

I'm not a big believer in the idea that empathy and/or sympathy can lead to effective advocacy. At least in cases of work issues.

And if the leader hasn't felt crunch (sleeping under desk etc).. then I can't believe they'd know how to fight against it.

If these union bosses didnt have solid code contributions and have never been under crunch...and have never lived it. I'd question their intelligence on the subject.

I'd be too picky about the leadership for me to ever join a union. I'd want to know exactly who they are and how qualified they are to be speaking on my behalf...
And if they prefer OO to F(x) ... If they get the answer wrong...I'd be out real quick.
