How can #citizenscience help save fungi? 🤔

Coordinated by FunCC member @cfemycolab.bsky.social, this review in @consletters.bsky.social explores challenges and solutions for how #citsci projects can turn data on #fungi diversity into actionable #conservation measures. 🍄🧪🌎 #conservationscience

Gorillas in Congo’s Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park scratch the ground for truffles, not for insects as long assumed, study says.

With these findings, Gaston Abea becomes Ndoki's first Indigenous lead author of a peer-reviewed scientific paper.

But that’s starting to change. Through global collaborations, we're helping ensure more fungi are being assessed now than ever before. We’re also developing the tools to accelerate the Red Listing of fungi, so this often-overlooked kingdom further enters the conservation spotlight

This is a big deal, as fungi are often invisible - living underground, hidden in wood or in close relationships with other organisms, making them historically difficult to monitor and rarely included in global conservation priorities.

They are essential to life - sustaining plant growth, recycling nutrients, and supporting entire ecosystems. Yet many species remain unassessed. Urgent action is needed to assess more fungi & reduce their extinction risks - protecting fungi means protecting our planet’s future 🌏

Fungal waves! Our research is on the cover of @nature.com.

The study explores how mycorrhizal #fungi construct lace-like networks that move carbon outward from plant roots in a wave-like formation.
