Totally agree, there is so much to discover, it is a lifelong pleasure. My key criteria for adding non-fiction books to my collection is 'I'll probably never come across this again'.

Sometimes I look at my large book collection and sigh because every single book represents years of effort and struggle and eventually joy and publication and every single one of them is lost to the world. Maybe we just need to think of novels as ephemeral media in the same way magazines are.

I went to a grammar school, all the senior teachers had been through the war. They taught mostly colonial history, WWII was probably a bit too recent for teaching, but by crikey the thought that someone could make pro-Nazi statements and not get a double Saturday detention ...
