"yet another example of the lack of transparency from government over the use of AI tech"

In a particular Southeast Asian govt, I've learned that there's no coherent national data governance framework, let alone a lead gov agency with oversight to track/require disclosure on who is using AI
"Not a single Whitehall department has registered the use of AI systems since the government said it would become mandatory, prompting warnings that the public sector is “flying blind” about the deployment of algorithmic technology affecting millions of lives."

This episode on how Big Tech's consistent use of narrative frames of "AI as a race" & how that has seeped into our consciousness is a must listen. The moment you learn about the frames, it feels like you've put on specs and finally see things clearly-an eye-opener 🧐

We’ve had fake names used in contexts of fraud and embezzlement in Philippine politics before: Jane Ryan, Jose Velarde, Jose Pidal. But oh boy, did they screw up with ‘Mary Grace Piattos’ because that is absolutely cartoon villain territory.

A few interesting things here in the #Philippines as the ball rolls in pursuing accountability for Duterte-era violations:

- Secretary of Justice explicitly uses the term ‘IHL’ Law (RA 9851) as possible basis to prosecute Duterte.
- RA 9851 is the PH’s ‘domestication’ of the Rome Statute

Talked to a friend about where to find interesting governance consultancies or full-time work. Stories expose what matters to the individual: full-time hybrid set-up, stacking gigs but fully remote, flexible hrs vs long days, building a diverse portfolio vs one policy area, remote or onsite etc

People are often surprised to hear that Seoul's bus system was just as disorganized, congestive and chaotic as the Philippines - as recently as 2003.

One of the first reforms they implemented was a congestion-free median bus lane, similar to the EDSA Carousel busway.
