We're doing similar things up in Canada - we keep talking about our Postal Service like it's a business and not a required government service. It's really expensive to deliver mail directly to a mailbox in the Yukon! It's not a business model anyone would willingly choose!

The manager, especially the best manager, should have a handle on all of these factors. Not having a handle on substantial on AND off-field issues is poor management, period.

So your stance is that the manager's only job is things that he can directly see and address while sitting in the dugout?
Everything else is... happenstance? Maybe he should have trusted people in the bullpen making sure his players aren't breaking the league rules and the law.

Seems to me that a player making phone calls DURING games falls directly in the purview of the guy managing the team. But hey - how could you know?
