I would play that, and if you enjoy it just wait for the new mainline games releasing this year. It's fun getting caught up in the hype cycle and discovering all the new pokemon with everyone else. :)

Scarlet/Violet are the newest "standard formula" games and the easiest answer to this question. They run great on Switch2.
If you can find a copy at a decent price, Heartgold/Soulsilver (DS) are typically considered the best games in the series.
