I don't think that is necessarily true. Stupidity helps, but normal, intelligent decent people are not immune from relentless propaganda and blatant lies.

Indeed. One of the benefits of old age (in my opinion, over 60) is that one can be selectively rude. I was asked that patronizing question recently by someone about a third of my age "and how many years young [sic]are you?". I hate that. And told her so.

Alas, many people ARE that dumb. Human beings are complicated, but easily manipulated, in particular to believe what they want to if it suits them. Elon Musk in particular understands how he can influence the world to come into line with his perverted views about humanity.

I know this is a bit of a late reply, I was just thinking, "Johnny Got His Gun" reminded me of "Disabled", a poem by Wilfred Owen I was introduced to in high school. I'm not really into poetry, but this, written by a soldier in WW1 depicts a similar horror story.
