Utterly, utterly astonishing how little British police seem to care about crimes like these, when people literally have trackers showing where their stolen stuff is! Time and again we see that following leads like this can result in smashing organised crime.

You might have seen this week’s coverage of the phone theft gang that was smashed by the Met police. The police said the gang may have shipped 40,000 stolen phones from the UK to China, around 40% of all the devices reported stolen in the capital in a given year. The only embarrassing thing for the Met is that their mega investigation seems to have been prompted by a member of the public using Apple’s Find My feature to track their iPhone to a warehouse near Heathrow, where they alerted security to a large box of stolen phones, who in turn eventually got the police to take it seriously. Whether the gang would have been found out without that enterprising member of the public doing their own detective work is unknown, although it shows that a basic bit of legwork can make the difference.

Came to Manc yesterday and have tried unlocking four Starling Bank Bikes:
2 did not unlock
1 made a loud clanking noise as the wheel turned
1 had a flat tyre

Complete utter shit compared to London's system.

Only protester outside Tory conference in Manchester at the moment. Back in 2021 as a student journalist I remember it was heaving with protesters.

People using #FOI usually have a reason for making a request (like residents, campaigners, charities & journalists)

But that doesn't mean public bodies should change approach depending on who asks:

I guess so. We had to wait for bike to pick it up (5/10 mins) and then we had to wait for everyone to use the lift before we could get in with all our stuff. Basically added an extra 40 mins to getting out of the station. Would have been easier to stomach if we could have just reassembled bike.

Arrived at St Pancras. Bike disassembled and in a bag, carrying all my bags - no trolleys provided. £50 per bike. Not allowed to reassemble on platform as customs must see the red tag on the bag, apparently.

People who say Paris is a good example of a cycling revolution - I just cycled there and it was terrifying. Seemingly no proper signalling/priority. Never felt less safe cycling in a city tbh.
