With fear for our democracy, I dissent. -Justice Sotomayor

Time to make John Lewis proud with some good trouble.

Lover of democracy, animals, family, books, nature, Chicago sports and Chicago popes
Just as Chicago will never accept the Sears Tower by any other name, I'm confident the ugly signage will have little impact outside of those in the administration.

But then they released a new video using a doctored video of her from SNL, so they really just doubled down.

The VA issues disability checks based on conditions already documented in their computer systems for many of their employees. So for disabled veterans employed by the VA it's not like they can hide their disabilities. However, I suppose they don't need to make it any easier for these goons.

Beneath the Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan. His other books are also good.

Okay, appears you're itching for an argument I'm not trying to have. Hope you find peace today.

I agree it has potential with a different name on the building and if the owner asked for more reasonable rates. But it'll always be isolated without through traffic. They'll need more than a retailer or 2 to pull people over.
November 11, 2025 at 1:23 PM
Exactly! Who the hell wants THAT as their landlord? Someone needs to explain to him people only go down there to board river cruises, so he can't ask for Mich Ave rates. He should just sell the damn building. Everyone would be happier.
November 11, 2025 at 12:53 PM
He's bitter nobody wants to rent on the ground floor of his building, which happens to be on the side of the river walk that sees little to no foot traffic. He likely expected proximity to mag mile to pull in big $$$, but it's in a dead zone. He doesn't know the city at all.

We're a furloughed family who just closed on a new house last month. It's been insanely stressful, but we're figuring it out. Co-workers who are hurting worse are conflicted. But for us, healthcare is too important. We'd much rather keep weathering this storm to protect affordability.
November 10, 2025 at 4:03 PM
Even if Thune keeps his word, Johnson has made no such promise to hold a vote. We've been played too many times to believe this is a good idea. On behalf of a furloughed family, healthcare is too important to cave!

Please talk to Durbin! And when I say talk, I mean yell on behalf of all Illinoians!

I've tried to read this multiple times, but the pop-up ads are making it impossible. Will have to look up the story from another source, unfortunately.

To be clear, I think their behavior is abhorrent. But the choice of clothing doesn't appear to be inspired by anything other than their preferred football team. I think the bad behavior was born of alcohol, opportunity, and inflated sense of self-importance.
October 21, 2025 at 12:48 AM
Nah, it looks like they're Giants fans in town for the game. The accents give that away if the clothing didn't.

Thanks, I'm well aware. But I grew up and spent most of my life in/around Chicago, so that will always be where I'm from. I tell people in Madison the Chicagoland area, because they are close enough in proximity to recognize that term.
October 13, 2025 at 2:44 PM
When I lived in Europe, I told people I was from Chicago. When I lived in AZ, MN, and NC I told people I was from the Chicago area. Now that I live in Madison I say I'm from Chicagoland and often specify NW burbs. There was a time I lived in the city, and I claimed Chicago then. Context matters.

Oh yes, it is so much fun to finally have a bid accepted on a home in a very competitive market only for the government to shut down and suddenly a furlough letter from the feds isn't as reassuring a proof of employment/income as it used to be. It's a dream turned nightmare for us.
October 3, 2025 at 3:56 PM
I feel this in my bones! You are not alone.
October 2, 2025 at 2:29 PM
Not on reddit, but I'd be happy to tell them about how the joy of finally having a bid accepted on a house in a very competitive market last week has quickly turned into a nightmare due to my husband being a federal employee. Mortgage company isn't feeling confident about employment/income.

Same!

Yes, you can keep ammo in your home for defense, but the government can trace the bullets to who they were sold or distributed to.
September 10, 2025 at 12:10 AM
Missing in his comparison to Switzerland is that ammo is carefully regulated and traceable to an individual. Guns can't be transported outside of the home if loaded. And ammo is purchased at ranges only for use at that location. Exceptions exist for hunting, but again all ammo is traceable.

Population size is needed for context. Also, it helps to have some understanding of crime trends, because while nobody like these numbers, they are entirely consistent with a good weather holiday weekend in a large city. Bet you'll be shocked by the curative effect of winter too.
