The way snakes move is probably the most beautiful, elegant form of locomotion ever evolved in nature. We should all be so lucky, to traverse the world with such grace

Overlaying maps of every city with a trader Joe's and every city with a winco to find places I'd consider living

Things change, players rise and decline, but right now it sure feels like Sinner and Alcatraz will just play each other in every grand slam final for the next 10 years

I'm certain I've looked it up before but I thought Ataturk was some kind of honorific. Turns out he was just named that. Another one for the file, along with Hedo Turkoglu, Arsene Wenger, and Italo Calvino

Poem talk on the timeline today so posting one of my faves that isn't extremely famous. I don't know if a 20 line poem can have a twist but the ending here hits like a freight train

I've never noticed this one (and I'm not convinced it's exactly true) but two precise opposite Brit/NA idioms I know from sports are "just about" and "unplayable"

They just about won:
UK - won but barely
US - lost but barely

He was unplayable:
UK - he was very good
US - he was very bad
Spent literal years and several arguments with my wife and various other Americans before I realised that "quite" in the US means the exact opposite of what it means everywhere else

In British English quite= somewhat/slightly
In the US, quite= very

Understanding this was a total gamechanger

It's crazy that there's a tiny strait with a big mountain right at the mouth of a huge inland sea that connected almost all of the ancient world's civilizations. Seems fake

Imagine taking the train across the rail bridge at the only North Korea-Russia border crossing that is immediately downstream of the North Korea-Russia-China tripoint.

No punchline here, just imagine it

I despise those things where you have an endless quote tweet of a prompt but I do love talking about places I've been so hope it's not in bad taste to do it fresh

Furthest I've been (only independent, adult travel):

N: Barnaul, Russia
E: Busan, South Korea
S: Rinca, Indonesia
W: La Push, WA

It's pretty funny where we ended up on Representation (especially in animation) is that an actor has to be vaguely the same ethnicity as a character but not all that close. A white guy can't play Khan in King of the Hill, but Chinese Malaysian playing Laotian is fine

It's so cool that the "bread" part of an ice cream sandwich is a food material that never occurs in any other dish on earth

Passively rewatching 30 Rock from the top due to current Twitter discourse and in addition to the famous Lemon Party joke in a later season ("you can't have a lemon party without old dick!") there's also one in episode 2

As a white person not involved in high level college admissions, I honestly thought you were supposed to check African American if you were born in Africa. Does it literally just mean black? You don't get credit if you're like a first generation American born to many generation Malagasy parents?

When someone I generally like and respect tells me they're homeschooling their kid it's such a shock. Not sure there's anything else you can do to lower my opinion on you more dramatically.

I'm willing to admit that I think it's extremely confusing that there is a Mauritius and a Mauritania. And that other than that both are in it near Africa they couldn't be more different

To this end I would be interested in seeing a poll for something like "do you support President Trump's current actions in Iran?" Guarantee it's way different results
People seem to be reading this like "even trump fans are turning on him about this!". But I think what's actually happening is they will just iteratively redefine war as we go so that trump's actions never constitute war
"Do you want America to be at war with Iran?"

No: 85%
Yes: 5%
