So, looking back, who the fuck would say something like that to a teenager? And now, as a queer adult, I find myself wondering more and more about this man I never met, who died from a disease that took him and many other queer people from the world. People who never got to share their stories.

I was 15 when I told my mom I'm gay. There were signs beforehand but we both would rather live in denial before I didn't want to anymore. On that night, after I told her, she said, "Brant was gay, and he died from AIDS." I didn't know who Brant was. She told me he was my stepdad's dad.
